Program Handbook
Program Description: This program focuses on the hospitality and tourism industry as
well as the basic fundamentals of technology and computers.
This program is a Career Tech program and is governed by the
Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
ODCTE provides a learning environment that simulates the
workplace and offers hands-on and applied learning experiences
all while preparing students for every aspect of the workforce.

Instructor Philosophy: “If I could only teach you one thing, it would be how to teach
yourself.”
“It is my desire to provide an environment where active
learning can take place. And I believe that all students can
behave appropriately in my classroom and come to class with a
professional attitude.”
Student Organization Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a Career and
Technical Student Organization for students enrolled in
business related classes. Hospitality, Tourism and Computer
Technology is a business program, therefore making BPA the
student organization affiliated with it.
All students enrolled in this career tech business class or
another business class have the opportunity to join this
organization.
Dues are $20 for the entire year
Opportunities offered to students through this organization
include, but are not limited to, the following: competitive
events, service activities, leadership positions, team building
opportunities, networking, and state and national leadership
conferences.

Classroom Duty Positions Classroom Duty Positions are opportunities for students to take
leadership in the classroom and exercise their skills in real
world situations through these positions.
Initially, the positions will be volunteer/nominated for with a
classroom vote for run offs.
The positions are:
Office Monitor: Insures that students are cleaning up after
themselves and pushing chairs in at the end of class.
Receptionist: Is responsible for greeting guests. Is responsible
for answering instructor’s office phone when instructor is busy.
Office Manager: Oversees any equipment/materials checkout at
the beginning of class and check-in at the end of class.
Responsible for making sure the classroom printer(s) have
paper. Serves as assistant to Instructor.
Once these positions have been filled initially, they will be
rotated out at the beginning of every month. The only exception
is the receptionist will move up to Office Manager each month.
The old Office Manager must train their replacement, the old
Receptionist/new Office Manager must train the new
Receptionist and the old Office Monitors must train their
replacements.
Special Note The following behavior response plans, rules, policies and
procedures are in place to create an organized, orderly and
professional environment where active learning can take place.
Behavior Response Plan: IF A RULE OR POLICY IS BROKEN:
1. Verbal warning
2. Conference with the teacher and loss of points on time
management/work ethic sheet
3. Call to parent or legal guardian and loss of points on
time management/work ethic sheet
4. Detention, loss of points on time management/work
ethic sheet & call to parent or legal guardian
5. Referral to Deans
SEVERE CLAUSE: Immediate referral to the appropriate
administrator

STUDENTS WHO BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY AND DO
THEIR WORK WILL EARN:
1. Verbal praise
2. Happy Grams/Call home to parents or legal guardians
3. Keep time management/work ethic points

end of a unit of study
Classroom Rules &
Guidelines:
1. Be courteous and respectful of instructor, classmates &
classroom equipment & materials
2. Keep your attitude and language clean & professional
3. Cell phones must be put away unless otherwise instructed
(please see cell phone policy for more detailed guidelines)
4. NO food or drink except at team tables in center of room
(please see food & drink policy for more detailed guidelines)
5. NO hall passes except in emergencies (see hall pass policy
for more detailed guidelines)

Grades Work and grades in this program are categorized in the
following ways:
50% Formative
 20% - Time Management
 30% - Daily & Weekly Assignments, Projects and
Participation
50% Summative
 25% - Quizzes
 25% - Tests
Grading Procedures In order for any assignment, project, quiz, test or report to be
graded, it MUST be turned in via the designated format (paper

or digital).
Paper assignments must be turned in (with full name and date)
to the wire basket on the supply desk.
To submit work in Google Classroom, you MUST click the
“turn in” or “mark as done” buttons. I WILL NOT grade
assignments that have not been marked as done.
I will keep a running spreadsheet of all graded work for each
class.
Power School Gradebook will be up to date each Monday
(exceptions and special cases to be specified by verbal or digital
notice from instructor)
Make Up Policy When a student completes and turns in make-up work, he or she
must verbally notify the instructor upon submission.
The timeframes and grade reductions for make-up work are as
follows:
 First two weeks after due date – Max 80%
 After two weeks and up to one month past due date –
Max 70%
NO make-up work will be accepted one month past the original
due date.
Students who do not take advantage of time in class WILL NOT
be allowed to come during other classes or stay after school to
make up work (exceptions apply).
Time Management/Work
Ethic/Initiative
Time management and work ethic will be a weekly grade
students will receive. This tool monitors and grades the student
on their work ethic, tidiness, timeliness and ability to stay on
task and set realistic and relative goals.
Students can earn up to 20 points per day for a total possible 60
points per week. Reports MUST be completed as directed and
MUST be turned in EVERY Friday at the end of class in order
to count for a grade. Only ONE late report will be accepted.
Adjustments for early release and holidays will be made
accordingly.
Time Management Reports are worth 20% of student’s entire
grade in the class.

When working in a unit, daily assignments are in place as a
guideline in order to complete the unit on time. However, this
DOES NOT mean that once a student has completed that day’s
“assignment,” they can goof off for the rest of the class. I expect
those students who are able to complete their work faster than
the suggested time frame to work ahead or work on their
keyboarding or BPA related projects. This is called taking
initiative and is part of a good work ethic.
“Free time or Tech time” can be earned when finishing a unit
early combined with good time management & work ethic.
Hall Passes DO NOT ask for a hall pass during the first 15 or last 15
minutes of class. I will not write one.
DO NOT ask for a hall pass during 7th
or 8th
hours unless it is
absolutely necessary!!
DO NOT interrupt a classmate, guest speaker or the instructor
to ask for a hall pass.
Hall passes WILL NOT be given to those students who are not
working.
Cell Phone Policy Cell phones must either be on silent or turned off during class..
Cell phones should not be seen out during class EXCEPT
during a “tech break” or special class activity as directed by the
teacher.
Violations of this policy will result in interventions as indicated
by the Behavior Response Plan with the following
modifications:
1. Verbal warning
2. Conference with the teacher, loss of points on time
management/work ethic sheet & surrendering phone to
teacher to be locked in a drawer for rest of class period
3. Call to parent or legal guardian, loss of points on time
management/work ethic sheet & surrendering phone to
teacher at beginning of each class period to be locked in

Music Policy Students are not to listen to music on cell phones. As per cell
phone policy, cell phones are not to be used during class.
Students who want to listen to music may do so on the
computer using headphones and the following approved sites:
Spotify, Sound Cloud or Pandora. Should students wish to use
online radio or music site other than the approved sites, they
must get approval from the teacher.
Students must use headphones when listening to music on
computer. If students do not have access to personal
headphones or earbuds, classroom headphones can be checked
out during class.
***When the teacher, another student or a guest speaker are
speaking and/or giving a presentation, headphones and earbuds
must be off/out of ears and students must give full attention to
the person or persons speaking.***
Computer Policy The computers in this classroom are for class work and
curriculum ONLY – except during special activities and “tech
time” as indicated by instructor. Violations of this policy will
result in interventions as indicated by the Behavior Response
Plan with the following modifications:

Food & Drink Policy No food or drink will be allowed at the computer workstations.
Any food or drink brought in the classroom MUST remain at
the team tables in the center of the room.
Bringing food or drink in the classroom is a privilege that the
teacher has the right to take away at any time. Students should
not take advantage of this privilege. Violations will result in
interventions as indicated by the Behavior Response Plan along
with temporary or permanent loss of Food and Drink privileges.
Slackers Policy Any student who comes to class and either choses to do
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING or nothing more than the Do Now
and then play on their phone or the computer for the entire hour
WILL do the following:
 Surrender phone to instructor for the duration of the
class
 Sit at the fire pit and write an essay on why they don’t
want to do any work.
Refusing to do so will result in a phone call to parents,
immediate referral to deans and an automatic zero for that day
on their time management report.
Entrance Procedure 1. Enter room quietly, calmly and professionally
2. Pick up portfolio from file crate
3. Sit at assigned workstation
4. Log-on to computer
5. Complete the Do Now
6. Follow the day’s agenda
Exit Procedure 1. Clean/straighten workstation
2. Throw away any trash
3. Return portfolio to file crate
4. Return any textbooks or other materials to their proper place
5. Log off computer (last hour will shut down)
Return to seat and stay seated until released by the teacher. DO
NOT stand by the door to wait for the bell to ring.
6. Exit calmly, quietly and professionally
