SAILING IS NECESSARY

Carlos Alberto Júlio, the son of commerce devoted Portuguese
immigrants, has always been in love with work and the world
surrounding it. Just a toddler, behind the counter of his father’s bar in
São Paulo, he amused himself watching his father captivate clients.

It was marketing by who had never even read about the subject.
“Moving the beer glasses around” to stimulate friendship among
customers.

As a little boy he decided to sell his mother’s homemade codfish cakes
(a traditional Portuguese delicacy) at the local amateur football field.
The entrepreneurship worked! The product was indeed delicious but
Carlos Júlio even at that very young age had already shown he had
what it takes to be an excellent salesman.

A hard working young man, he went to public schools until he was 13
when he was approved in the selective process of the Instituto
Tecnológico de Osasco where he studied Electronics. He’d go to school
in the morning and work in the afternoon to pay the tuition.

It was a hard and demanding routine. He’d leave the house, in the
south side of South America’s biggest city at 5:30am and take three
buses to the west side, in Osasco, where he studied from 7:00am to
noon. From 2:00pm until around 6:00pm he worked as a salesclerk at
Foto Kodama.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, Carlos Alberto Júlio took an
English course; on Tuesdays and Thursdays, photography. Around
midnight he arrived home.

Carlos Júlio was the “poor kid” in his classroom at the Institute, thus
making him have a very clear idea of what he wished for: a
professional condition that would provide his future family, specially
his children, with the security and tranquility that he himself lacked in
his teenage years.

A MAN OF COUNTLESS TRIPS

Carlos Júlio decided to invest all that he was earning with his first jobs
in education. Facing various difficulties, many of the neighborhood kids
dropped out of school. To Júlio though, that seemed like quite a big
strategic mistake. How would they be able to escape that situation if
they didn’t rid themselves of ignorance?

With his savings he opened up his own car dealership when he was 18.
By then, he was already going to Business School. Two years later, he
became director of a trading company. Then he started studying
Foreign Trade and at 23 he was running another trading company.
Nine years later he took over his first president position in a
multinational corporation.

A true workaholic, Carlos Júlio worked up to 16 hours a day. If the
tasks were over, he would always find something else to do. And he
never even took advantage of his 30 day vacation.

But that doesn’t mean he was incarcerated in cigarette-smoke filled
offices. In twelve years working as a trader and eight running
multinationals, he travelled around the world visiting more than sixty
eight countries, learning about business, people and their cultures,
totaling more than three hundred trips in all five continents.

Carlos Júlio continued his studies abroad. After graduating in Business,
specializing in Foreign Trade in São Paulo, he got his Masters in
Business in America and specialized in Strategic Marketing at Harvard
Business School in Boston, at IMD in Switzerland and recently at the
London Business School in the UK.

In 1999 when he was reinventing himself professionally in Boston he
suddenly fell sick with fever. He came back to Brazil and the doctors
diagnosed him as having the flu. But the symptoms persisted so he
was back at the hospital where x-rays showed spots on his lungs which
could be an inflammation or a lymphoma. It was a shock. It even
crossed his mind that he had reached the end of life’s journey.

In January the following year a biopsy was made while he re-evaluated
his professional life, his role in family and in society. It was a period of
deep reflection. The diagnosis arrived a few days later. It was
sarcoidosis, an autoimmune illness that could be treated with
corticoids. A twenty-day period of anxiety, anguish and learning had
come to an end.

Afterwards, Carlos Alberto Júlio presided HSM do Brasil, a world
renowned company in the international seminars area for forming and
updating leaders and it was there that he met the biggest personalities
in the business world, people like Peter Drucker, Jack Welch, Tom
Peters and many others.

In January 2008, Carlos Júlio became president at Tecnisa, one of the
country’s largest and most innovative civil construction companies and
led the company’s growth, focusing on customized and innovative
construction management projects, on service qualifications and on
the use of new technologies to communicate with suppliers, partners

most complex subjects.

always someone asking him for “two minutes” of his attention, an idea
overview, a book or even the presentation slides.

Carlos Júlio is recognized by Brazilian weeklies Veja and Exame as
one of the country’s best speakers.

In 2010 he completed 30 years teaching in business schools and
