EDITION 5 - Q4 2014 NEWS
Welcome to the fifth edition of our newsletter with information to keep you updated on the latest developments
at Proferro. In this issue we will be sharing some details regarding our recent considerable investment in new
3D machinery manufactured by Kreon Technologies. This enables us to quickly and efficiently create 3D scans of
prototypes as well as serial items. Another development involves the installment this summer of a new filter
installation for our cupola. Furthermore, in early September we hosted a very successful Open Day in Ypres,
where the machines of our clients CNH and Claas Tractor made a big impression. And finally we will briefly
focus on another milestone in the history of our business - the celebration of Proferro’s 25th anniversary.

PROFERRO INVESTS IN 3D MEASURING EQUIPMENT
FROM KREON TECHNOLOGIES
In the autumn of 2014 Proferro put into use a 3D laser scanner with a portable measuring
arm manufactured by Kreon Technologies. Due to the increasing demand for large,
heavy castings, which are produced on the HWS molding line, Proferro had to start
looking for an easier and more efficient way of comparing unfinished castings to the
specifications provided by our clients. The traditional tactile approach is of limited use
for such complex items because at 500 measurements per item, the results become hard
to read and analyze. Furthermore, from a quality assurance perspective it is essential
that any changes in the production process can be measured as early as possible.
After a thorough analysis of several systems against decisive criteria such as quality,
ergonomics, precision and speed, Proferro opted for a Kreon technologies solution - a 3D
laser scanner (Solano type) coupled with a Kreon Ace measuring arm (type ACE-7-30).
“This new measuring equipment enables us to make 3D scans of prototypes and serial items
both quickly and efficiently. The scans are immediately converted into usable graphics and
then compared in 3D to a CAD/CAM model drawing to detect possible deviations. If necessary,
we can also apply dimensional measurements to the digitized item. Proferro currently
uses the Kreon measuring arm together with GeoMagic Wrap, Quartis and PointMaster
- software packages that ensure very high data accuracy. The instant visual presentation
gives us an immediate insight into where and how much any product deviates from the spec.
Furthermore, the system allows us to build a database of all the scanned castings, offering a
wide range of opportunities for future application: since the scanned items remain available
in their digitized form, we can compare them to actual castings as and when it is necessary.
This also allows us to perform additional measurements to already scanned items” explained
Ronny Dieleman, Senior Quality Manager at Proferro.
The Solano 3D laser scanner boasts an accuracy of 40 µm and can scan up to 40,000
points per second. Combined with the ACE-7-30 measuring arm its scanning accuracy
is 0.077 mm. The arm itself has a measuring range of 3 meters and its 7 axes provide
ample freedom of movement. The measuring arm can also be equipped with a touch
probe to enable tactile measuring. The new Kreon equipment, has also enabled Proferro
to considerably increase our measuring capacity. In addition, it greatly enhances the
company’s ability to respond to the demands of both current and future clients.

equipped with a brand new filter installation. “Our previous one
dated back to 1995 and was due for replacement. The new filter
installation, manufactured by the Luhr company from Germany,
was installed by Ferrum B.V. Engineering Consultants” explained
Proferro’s Eric Page, Production Manager. The hot cupola flue
gases are purified in an afterburner and a filter installation.
Proferro constantly monitors the quality of the emitted air via an
emissions monitoring system.
25 YEARS OF PROFERRO
Proferro’s history goes back to 1936, the year in which the
Belgian industrial entrepreneur Charles Steverlynck founded the
automated looms company Weefautomaten Picañol NV. In the
early years the foundry exclusively produced parts for weaving
machines under the name Picañol, but in the decades thereafter
it increased its importance as a supplier for other industries.
By the late 1980s, two-thirds of the production found its way to
clients other than Picanol. In September 1989, Picanol separated
the foundry section from its other activities, transferring it to the
newly created 100% subsidiary Proferro. Over the past 25 years
and thanks to a constant focus on innovation and quality, Proferro
was able to leverage our engineered casting solutions to become
one of the key players in the foundry environment. The 25th
anniversary is another milestone in the rich history of Proferro.
To celebrate this special day in style, we have asked the brewery
Sint Canarus – located next to the church in Gottem – to brew a
unique beer for the occasion.
