UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI CAGLIARI
DIPARTIMENTO SCIENZE DELLA VITA E DELL’AMBIENTE
Via T. Fiorelli, 1 - 09126 CAGLIARI
Cagliari, 18th November 2015
To whom it may concern,
I am writing in support of my ex-student Michaela Agrifoglio, and strongly
recommend her for your programme. Michaela Agrifoglio completed a Master Degree in
Marine Bioecology at the University of Cagliari, during which she attended my
laboratory for the internship devoted to the completion her experimental thesis. She
demonstrated excellent skills and applied her knowledge.
She is talented in molecular biology, such as DNA extraction from a specimen by
using the salting-out technique (DNA Extraction), DNA barcoding, Polymerase Chain
Reaction or PCR (a technique for in vitro synthesis of DNA), and gel electrophoresis. Her
research comprised also an accurate bioinformatics analysis using the MEGA6, Arlequin
(WinArl35.exe) and Dnasp programmes.
The aim of her study was to acquire data for the conservation of endangered
species or the proper management of commercial species.
In particular she studied Dipturus oxyrinchus (longnose skate) to identify
possible genetic variability among the populations in the Sea of Sardinia (Western
Mediterranean Sea, Italy).
During her time in my lab, Michaela Agrifoglio demonstrated good interpersonal
skills.
In conclusion, I definitely recommend Michaela Agrifoglio for your internship or
PhD programme. I am glad I had the opportunity to be her teacher through to the final
discussion of her project, and I am confident her knowledge will grow through your
scientific programme.
Please feel free to contact me for further information.
Yours faithfully,
Rita Cannas
