Bahla was a major center for the traditional pottery industry in Oman, where pottery has been made since early human needs arose. The process of making pottery is complicated and involves several steps - clay is first prepared, then each piece is shaped using templates, placed on a wheel, and finally fired in an oven at temperatures up to 1170°C. Bahla Fort was also historically significant to the local pottery industry.
