Chapter 13 Systems Development: Design, Implementation, Maintenance,
and Review
You have learned about information systems and seen a little about how the project is run to create a new
system. This week you will focus on the actual systems design process. This will help you whether you
become a programmer, systems analyst or are a department manager. There are countless articles on
this subject on the internet and some great YouTube videos so take a moment to do some extra research
and learn more about systems development.
When an IS manager sits down to design a system they look at several areas and have many special
tools at their disposal.
A systems engineer or senior developer will first look at the logical design. This usually means that they
look at the user request and determine what they really mean! Once they have clarification they will create
a physical design. This might be object-oriented (using code that has already been created) or mock ups
showing interface design and controls. This is sometimes called storyboarding. This image is an example
of creating a new user interface:
System design time is an investment for the business, it will help by preventing, detecting, and correcting
errors prior to the application software being written. It will generate systems design alternatives. One
alternative is to ask software developers to create the application for the business, this is done by creating
a request for proposal (RFP). Software vendors will then propose several options at various price points.
The business can then review the proposals, do a cost benefit analysis and select an appropriate plan of
action.
Once a project has started it is a good idea to freezing design specifications using a contract, and even a
design report called a Functional Design Document. This process is intended to allow the development
team to focus on creating a specific application and not have to try to hit a constantly moving target. As
the application is being developed it is also time to acquire the hardware that will be needed. If the
application requires a headset with microphone for voice input or a super-fast computer, this is the time to
make sure the application will be functional when it is implemented.
Types of IS hardware vendors include:
General computer manufacturers
Small computer manufacturers
Peripheral equipment manufacturers
Computer dealers and distributors
Chip makers
While the application is being developed and the hardware acquired, in a perfect world the personnel will
be hired and trained and any preparations will be done for the site and data requirements (additional disk
drives for databases or could computing). One of the phases of software development is the testing
phase. It really cannot be considered the final stage because it may result in some additional planning,
programming or other modifications. It can be considered to be ...
The document discusses the systems development life cycle (SDLC) which includes 7 phases: planning, analysis, design, development, test, implement, and maintain. It describes the key activities and goals of each phase. For example, in the planning phase the goals are to design the system, set the project scope, and develop a project plan. In the analysis phase, business requirements are gathered through activities like joint application development sessions. The document also discusses knowledge worker roles, reasons for systems failure, and approaches to building systems such as insourcing, outsourcing, self-sourcing, and prototyping.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Project background:
Our client is a large network of sports clubs. To keep track of a large number of events,
managers of these clubs have to work hard to avoid mistakes and correctly keep track of
their clients and schedule classes manually.
It is widely believed that fitness and yoga classes in everyday life help to stay in good
physical shape and feel great psychologically.
In most cases people often don't have enough time to find out the schedule of desired
workouts or to make an appointment for a personal training, they have to make time
consuming calls and go through an inconvenient appointment process. It often happens that
your personal trainer is not informed in time about an upcoming workout or does not know
the number of people he or she has to work with.
To solve this problem, we set the task to create a simple system where users can easily
select the nearest sports club on the map and view a schedule of classes in it.
On the other hand, a coach or club employee will be able to receive timely information about
the number of participants and more conveniently choose the time of classes and create
such events on their smartphone. So the manager or trainer of the club will be able to add
new workouts based on the number of people who have signed up, and the client of the
fitness center will receive a timely notification with a reminder of the time and place of the
training.
Also, all employees must enter registration information into Excel files. They must also
manually check to see if the up to date with each client's registration form or not. The
application under development will allow automatic accounting and statistics of their sports
clubs with convenient export of information for further performance accounting.

KEY USERS
Network Owner: use the system to view statistics for all fitness clubs. To evaluate the
effectiveness of advertising campaigns. Adds new clubs to the system according to the
franchise system and according to the plan of business scaling and growth
Club Manager: uses the system to view training results, user achievements, performance
statistics on an individual employee, also adds new employees to his club
Club Client: use the system to conveniently sign up for a workout, view class schedules,
choose a personal trainer for personal training, and use the notification system so you don't
miss important classes and other helpful tips
Club Coach: use the system to monitor class schedules and keep track of the number of
members and their workout results

as well as personnel management

EMPLOYEE / TRAINER: Use the system to manage and create new workouts, view client
information and achievements.
DEVELOPMENT TEAM: Includes all software engineers, business analysts, system
analysts, system designers, implementers, development and implementation specialists.

LIST OF RISKS
o All team members need time to prepare the room for the next training session;
o Some employees take training courses in their current specialty or additional
specialties;
o Lack of experience in some staff in managing software projects;
o No replacement if any member of the development team is unable to continue to
contribute to the project. Repeated search for contributors and refinement of a project
with unfamiliar source code can take a long time;
o Development time is limited to only 3 months. So the pressure is very high to deliver
the project within the stipulated timeframe;
o The development team won't be able to deliver components on time and the deadline
will have to be pushed to another date;
o The design team may stretch the deadline unacceptably due to an incorrectly
estimated scope of work at the start;
o Development of additional functionality that may be required in the future lengthens
the schedule;
o Low project budget reduces motivation and productivity;
o Possible conflicts between designer's ideas and developer's capabilities result in low
productivity, more meetings, and additional reworking of the project;
o People's tasks do not match their strengths;
o Components designed separately cannot be easily integrated, requiring redesign and
rework;
o Detailed reporting required by the owner may take longer to develop;
o Possible desired post-release changes, based on new ideas from the owner, will
increase the project completion time;
o Possible budget constraints for new revisions also carry the risk of not meeting new
customer desires;
o Assumptions and constraints of the Pro Jumping training app.
10. Vision and Scope Document
Appex Media - Global Outsourcing Solution Services 10
ASSUMPTIONS AND CONSTRAINTS OF THE
PRO JUMPING APP
o The system will apply to fitness clubs using their accounting system, such as
CRM.
o Customer registration information is handled by the manager or administrator of the
particular club. It is necessary to respect the confidentiality of the personal data
obtained.
o The development team will use React Native architecture to develop the system.
o The pay-for-workout policy is cash-based and managed by the finance department or
main office.
o The development team must have at least one two-hour meeting per week.
o Development time is 3 months (01/01/2023 to 01/04/2023).
o The development team must release the first test build before the review
(01/03/2023).
o Each team member must work at least 15 hours per week.

VISION OF SOLUTION
Vision Statement
As the department head of an international outsourcing team, I have been tasked with to
develop a new online registration system for training around the world. The new system will
allow clients to access a system to sign up for workouts and view schedules at selected
clubs on a map. To register for a new workout, add to their calendar or opt out of a registered
workout, the client can check the cost of the class or view their workout history and change
statistics.
Admin can use the system as a means of managing new members to the system about
clubs, new workout categories, employees, clients and their statistics.
The Finance Department will use the system to monitor financial activity and profit reports.
The system provides a better solution and policy for registering for trampoline or stretching
classes, yoga and so on.
The system reduces the time, cost and resources required to process student registration
information
12. Vision and Scope Document
Appex Media - Global Outsourcing Solution Services 12
Scope
In the scope of the system, it should be noted that this system is an online Training
Registration System for the club closest to the client.
It is not a management system for all of the customer's fitness clubs, which will require much
more information than the system we are trying to build. It's only part of the system of
workout records and tracking attendance statistics.
So we have to look at building applications that support customers who want to stay healthy,
be in great physical shape, and for administrators and the finance department to get financial
management capabilities.
Features list
o User login
o View a training schedule and available seats
o Sign up for general training
o Sign up for personal training
o Manage Training Information
o View upcoming events
o Record new upcoming events
o View employee biography
o View information and contact information for your favorite clubs
o Manage your training and attendance
o View detailed statistics
o Get helpful tips for keeping fit
o View your financial activity and keep track of your expenses
13. Vision and Scope Document
Appex Media - Global Outsourcing Solution Services 13
List of features that will not be developed
o Built-in payment for subscription memberships (billing system)
o Access to the system as a training expert or top level instructor with medical skills and
licenses
