Private investment in landscape initiatives can help scale up landscape restoration approaches. Tree-based systems provide income streams and environmental services, complementing other landscape management options. However, diverse constraints inhibit greater private investment in landscapes. 'Soft' public investment can ease these constraints by supporting good resource governance and local value addition, which increases incentives for landscape restoration. Trees and landscape restoration must be addressed in decentralization policies to encourage private investment in integrated landscapes where opportunities exist.
