Themes in the novel
 1. Love and marriage: One of the central theme of novel is exploration of
love and marriage in societal context of early 18th century. The novel
scruntinizes the different facets of love from superficial attractions to
profound emotional connections. Characters like Elizabeth bennet and Mr.
Darcy navigate societal expectations and personal feelings.
 2. Social class and status: Austin observes the rigid social class structure of
her time. The novel portrays the challenges and expectations associated
with social status, emphasizes the disparities between the aristocracy and
the lower classes. Through characters like Bennet Family who are lower
standing and wealthy Mr. Darcy, Austin criticizes the prejudices ingrained
in society.
 3. Individual vs. Society:
The tension between individual desires and societal
expectations is a recurring theme. Characters like Elizabeth and
Mr. Darcy grapple with the pressure to conform to societal
norms while staying true to their individual values. The novel
explores the idea that genuine happiness can only be achieved
when individuals follow their hearts rather than succumbing to
societal pressures.
4. Mrs. Bennet: A foolish empty headed woman obsessed with seeing her
daughters married. She is poorly educated and her behavior is embarrassing.
5. Charles Bingley: Darcy’s best friend, wealthy and his nature opposite to
Darcy. He is easy going and his love affair with Jane presents perfect match.

of manner and very beautiful. She and Mr. Bingley fall in love and got
married.
7. Mr. Wickham: is a handsome militia officer. He is sexually predator and
fortune hunter, using his good looks.
Figurative Language:
 Irony: Austin uses verbal irony to convey the characters true feelings or to highlight
the disparity between appearance and reality. The title itself is ironic as the
characters initially embody pride and prejudice but evolve throughout the story.
Example Mr. Darcy proposal to Elizabeth is laced with verbal irony as he initially
insults her social standing saying that In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My
feeling will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire
and love you. REFERENCE: CHAPTER 34.
 Satire: the novel satirizes the social norms and class structure of time, especially
through characters like Lady Catherine is a satire of aristocracy. REFERENCE:
CHAPTER 19
 Foreshadowing: Austin employs sudden hints and foreshadowing to give
readers insight into future development of plot adding layers to narrative.
Example: Early in the novel, when Jane Bennet falls ill at Netherfield it for
shadows the obstacle in her relationship with mr. Bingley and sets stage
for future misunderstanding. Reference: CHAPTER:8
 Symbolism: Objects and action in novel often symbolize deeper meaning.
For example, the letters and the importance of reputation symbolizes the
communication and social expectation of the time. Example: Picturersque
estate of pemberly symbolizes darcy’s wealth and character
transformation, contrasting with his pride.
 Dialogue: dialogue reveals character traits, relationships and societal
expectations. The witty and insightful conversation contribute to overall
narrative. Example: The Banter and Witty Dialogue between Darcy ND
Elizabeth Bennet during netherfield ball reveal their intelligence and hint
at the complexity of their relationship. REFERENCE: CHAPTER 29.

enhancing the readers sensory experience. Example: Austin uses vivid
imagery to describe natural beauty of rosing park, lady Catherine
residency reflecting higher social status.
