3. MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN (MSP)
• 2nd most common cause of disability worldwide.
• Approximately 1.71 billion people have musculoskeletal conditions
worldwide.
• Low back pain causes the highest burden with a prevalence of 568 million
people.
• Because of population increases and ageing, the number of people with
musculoskeletal conditions is rapidly increasing

5. PREVALENCE OF CALCIUM DEFICIENCY
VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY IN INDIA
• Widespread twin nutrient deficiency
• In the largest and longest study reported from India (1963–
2005), 52% of the population studied had nutritional bone
disease.
• It is estimated that about 25 million may be affected with
osteoporosis

7. CAUSES OF CALCIUM DEFICIENCY
• Low Ca2+ intake
• Vitamin D deficiency
• Insufficiency or failure of parathyroid gland
• Chronic kidney failure
• Low blood magnesium level (in cases with severe alcoholism)

11. SUMMARY
• Non-specific musculoskeletal pain is an important problem
• These patient are difficult to diagnose and Higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and
insufficiency are commonly observed in this set of patient
• Low intake of calcium (<300mg) daily and higher vitamin D deficiency are commonly identified
factors in Indian patients
• This both factor can be corrected with supplements which provides adequate calcium and
vitamin D in cost effective manner
• Correction of deficiency state of these nutrient status would help in reducing pain and
improvement in quality of life
• Re-check improvement in vitamin D status in patients achieving pain relief
• Appropriate diagnosis and treatment of these patients would avoid inappropriate and long term
usage of NSAIDs and antidepressants
