*Gender is defined as a set of roles ascribed to people by
virtue of the fact they are males and females. Gender roles
mean the different things that a male or female is
considered capable of doing. It is important to note that
gender roles are learnt and vary according to one’s cultural
background. Gender roles are thus passed on from one
generation to another. This means that there are differences
in what women and men can do in different cultures. For
instance Ghanaian men who travel abroad assist their wives
in the kitchen. These same men will not be permitted by
their cultures to perform the same role in Ghana.

*Sex means male or female. Sex describes the biological
characteristics of a person. It thus shows whether a
person is a male or female. It is now clear that gender
and sex are not the same. While gender refers to the
roles assigned by society to males and females, sex is
determined by a person’s biological characteristics.

*Stereotypes are beliefs or stories that have no factual
truth but people belief them to be true and treat them as
such. Stereotypes apply to a whole group, and once a
person is a member of that particular group, the
stereotype applies to him or her. For example men are
considered to be courageous, so every man whether he
has this quality or not is presumed to be courageous.

*Males are heads of families and bread winners
*In Ghana, it is a common belief held by most
people that all families are headed by males.
This is not totally true because we have some
females who are heads of families and are bread
winners. In these families, women are the heads
who provide the needs of the members. Even in
some families, the may be present but they be
unable to work as a result of ill health. It must
also be added that some men are irresponsible.
The presence of such men in their homes does
not make any difference since it is their wives
who work to feed their families
