A group of 8th grade students from Black Mountain Middle School's GATE program competed in the annual We The People competition to defend their title, where they participated in a simulated congressional hearing and answered questions about political science and history. They placed second after losing to Meadowbrook Middle School by one point in the tiebreaker round.

Key artists included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, and Lee Krasner.

World War II began in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. By 1940, Paris had fallen to the Nazis and the US entered the war after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. The war ended in 1945 after the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Europe lay in ruins as Russia and the US emerged as rival superpowers in the postwar period. The Holocaust was revealed, with over 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis and horrifying conditions discovered at camps like Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald. Artists struggled to represent the trauma of the war, with many turning to abstract styles to depict the indescribable.

1) Post-World War II Europe was in a state of despair over the human costs of war and revelations of Nazi atrocities. 2) This disillusionment led many to turn to existentialist philosophy, like that of Jean-Paul Sartre, which proclaimed that without God, humans must define their own existence. 3) Sartre rejected the idea of a predefined human essence or nature, arguing that through our choices and actions, we invent ourselves.

Minimalism emerged in the 1960s as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism. It shifted the focus from painting to sculpture made from industrial materials and simple geometric forms. The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. On January 22, 2010 a group of young men and women from the Black Mountain Middle School Eighth Grade Homogeneous GATE class went to defend their title at the annual We The People Competition at Grossmont College, El Cajon, California. They competed in a simulated congressional hearing and answered questions about American political science and history.
