‘ DISAMBIGUATION’ “ Its Everyone Against Themselves…”
Opening sequence The opening sequence of ‘DISAMBIGUATION’ shows a mixed raced male exiting a building of a professional standard and entering a car. The scene then cuts to that same mixed raced male exiting the car and arriving at the common. From his costume of a shirt and tie, we are able to assume that he is a detective of some sort. There will then be a long shot of the mise en scene, where the audience will be able to a group of people in the distance. After which the scene will continuously cut back and forth from the detective in the common to a distorted male in a small confined space.
The setting of the distorted male is a small and confined space that is covered with blood, several newspaper clippings and photographs. When the opening sequence shows this distorted male there will be very fast takes on him and several match on action shots to show how frantic this character is. There will also be several close ups and extreme close ups on certain features of his face to keep he characters identity as restricted as possible. Meanwhile the scene of the detective shows the detective walking towards the crowd of people and be constantly tracked by the camera; with some eye line matches to show why there is such a large crowd. As the detective arrives at the crowd there are several forensic teams dusting a dead body for prints and other detectives asking bystanders questions about what had happened. The scene then cuts back to the distorted man with an extreme close and a slow take of his eyes. Most probably shot candid to give a more frantic effect.
The scene will then cut back to the detective bending down to examine the body the body first hand. As the detective begins to zip down the body bag the scene cuts back to the distorted man for a quick glimpse and then the detective fully opens the body bag to reveal the identity of the dead man. At this point the audience recognizes the same features on the dead body that are the same as the distorted man only now we are able to completely see the face and can see that the detective is the distorted man and the man in the body bag. The detective then looks in shock at the rest of his colleagues to see if anyone else can see that he is the person in the body bag. The detective then looks back at the body to see that it is a young female and not him. The scene then cuts back to the distorted man for the last time.
Codes and Conventions Through the opening sequence we have followed some generic codes an conventions of a thriller. Through mise en scene we have used blood and disturbing pictures. We also followed the typical characters of a detective, but by doing this we wanted to subvert to a typical protagonist so we have made the protagonist and the antagonist the same character. The setting of the distorted man is also typical for the thriller genre, by the use of a small confined space with extremely poor condidtions.
