Why do we teach
PDHPE in Primary Schools?
Rationale.
PDHPE in Primary Schools across NSW is one of the six
areas of the KLA (Key Learning Areas). Some of the
major drivers for PDHPE being taught are;
- Promote physical activity
- Develop and maintain social relationships
- Promote healthy life style choices
- Promote living and learning in a safe and secure
environment
Promote Physical Activity.
If children are encouraged to participate in physical
activity on a regular basis in can benefit them by
Improving cardiovascular efficiency and general
physical health
Help control obesity and improve fitness levels
Stimulate the brain (releasing endorphins)
Improve psychological health and wellbeing
Develop and Maintain
Social Relationships.
Positive social relationships can be developed for children
through participation in team sports. It allows children to
develop an understanding of team work by incorporating
fairness as well as support for class mates.
Students can develop a range of personal skills that can
advantage them throughout their lives which include
negotiation skills, conflict resolution, tolerance towards
others, effective communication among their team and
cooperating by working together.
Promote Healthy Life Style Choices.
Students are encouraged in PDHPE to make healthy life
style choices which ultimately can improve on their
quality of life.
Students are guided towards healthy life styles through
healthy eating, by understanding the different food
groups, and by understanding that some foods are only
ok in moderation.
LETS - EAT - HEALTHY!
Promote Living and Learning in
a Safe and Secure Environment.
In PDHPE students are
taught how to recognise
and deal with situations
that might put them and
their peers in danger such
as road safety or stranger
danger. The students are
taught how to protect
themselves and develop
strategies if faced with
any dangerous situation.
