I Chose Speaker:
                         Janine Benyus

Her talk titled: “The promise of biomimicry”
Her Thesis

             We Can learn
             practical
             applications by
             carefully
             observing and
             mimicking the
             adaptations found
             in the natural
             world.
She used sexuality to draw her audience in. She called the mating dances
of animals “foreplay.” Recalling from one of her experiences watching a
mating ritual and wanting to switch species so that she could take part in
such a ritual.
She maintains the attention of the audience by incorporating
intriguing slides into her presentation. She helps to explain
by painting verbal pictures and telling small
stories to make each point.
The Ted
                          Commandments
I believe Janine followed these the most

I. Her presentation was fresh and at times baffling. It surely left the audience
     with a lasting impression.

III. She made her points understandable while still hinting at the actual complexity
     involved.

VIII. She never read from a script or even referred to notes that I could see,
allowing her to really connect with the audience.

IX. She cut her talk short to make sure she didn’t exceed her time. In the end
she was still given more time and allowed to finish.
I’d give Janine a 4 out of 5 for dynamism. She did a
good job using hand gestures and movement as well
as having infliction in her voice.

To increase dynamism she could have had fewer pauses
Janine followed number 2: spread ideas and
move people from Nancy Duarte’s 5 rules

She did a great job of conveying the ideas and
incorporating pictures to show exactly what she
 was talking about.
Janine’s delivery taught me that visual aids are very
helpful. I learned that movement of the body and hand
gestures can go a long way. Also, combining
storytelling within the structure of your presentation will
engage the audiences’ imagination.
Janine Benyus speaks at a moderate pace.
She uses a light-hearted style humor.
She uses intriguing visual aids.
She keeps the audience interested with visual aids
and storytelling.
Uses a lot of hand gestures, and moves around
slightly while speaking.

                        Comparisons

Sir Ken Robinson speaks very quickly.
He uses a quick-witted style humor.
                        He doesn’t use visual aids.
He keeps the audience interested with his humor,
                        statistical facts, and asking questions.
Also uses a lot of hand gestures, and pans his head
across the audience rather than move his body.
Tips based on these talks
Use intriguing visual aids to go with your
concepts

Ask the audience questions to keep them
engaged

Challenge their imagination with hypothetical
situations

Try to incorporate humor throughout the
presentation

Engage the audience with lots of eye contact and
dynamism
