- General drive to integrated poilicies for marine environment The seas are used by many. Oil, gas, windenergy, tiday energy, land reclamation, fishery, recreation, shipping, ballastwater, marine protected areas, conservation policies, biodiversity treaties, …. EU Maritime policy: “ Based on the clear recognition that all matters relating to Europe's oceans and seas are interlinked, and that sea-related policies must develop in a joined-up way if we are to reap the desired results.” EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive: “establishes a framework within which Member States shall take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain good environmental status in the marine environment by the year 2020 at the latest. EU Marine and Maritime Research Strategy (commission document): “to create a better integration between marine and maritime research.” EU Roadmap for Marine Spatial Planning Policies need to be linked up and harmonized.
