New projects and activities
“The Seedbox: An Environmental Humanities Collab-
oratory” is a new research program funded by MISTRA
and Formas (50 MSEK). It includes around 60
researchers from Sweden and abroad. Linköping
University is the lead partner, KTH URS is taking part
in the program through Karin Bradley and Jonathan
Metzger. The program will include 6 postdocs, 4 PhD
positions, whereof one PhD student will be placed at

Karin Bradley has been appointed member of the “Anal-
ysis group Green Transitions” under the Minister for
Strategic Development: http://www.regeringen.se/s-

Karin Bradley has also been appointed member of the
expert group to “Digitaliseringskommissionen” under
the Minister for Housing and Urban Development and
Information Technology.
Professor em. Ulf Ranhagen has been appointed to
become member of the reference group for the VIN-
NOVA project Södertörnsmodellen – en stadsutveck-
ling I världsklass, which is a project within utmanings-
driven innovation in collaboration between KTH (coor-
dinator prof Berit Balfors), Ecoloop, Nordregion,
Sweden Green Building Council, Skanska, Södertörn-
skommunerna, White och WSP.
Ulf Ranhagen is also involved in a VINNOVA-project
regarding the further development of the eco-cycle
model 2.0.for NDS together with prof Björn Frostell in
collaboration between eco-loop, the city of Stockholm
and Futerra.
Yifang Ban is the project leader of the EO4Urban: Mul-
titemporal Sentinel-1A SAR and Sentinel-2A MSI Data
for Global Urban Services
The project is funded by the European Space Agency’s
Data User Element INNOVATOR III Program. The
project has two partners, KTH Geoinformatics and
University of Pavia in Pavia, Italy as well as two end
users, the Urban and Regional Development Depart-
ment at the Stockholm County Administrative Board
and National Geomatics Center of China in Beijing.
Yifang Ban is the coordinator for the Swedish universi-
ties of the Upgrading and Strengthening the University
Wide GIS Centre at Makerere University, Kampala,
Uganda
This project is funded by the SIDA Uganda program.
The partners are KTH Geoinformatics, Lund Universi-

2. ty GIS Center, and Makerere University, School of the
Built Environment.
Horizon 2020 Planning Grant from the Swedish
National Space Board to support Yifang Ban coordinat-
ing an application to the Horizon 2020 Space call.
Bengt Sundborg has been invited to a four weeks visit at
Birmingham City University within the Erasmus+ Staff
Exchange Program from 27th of April to 22th of May.
Bengt will give lectures on Daylight in the urban mor-
phology - adaptations in streets, blocks and buildings.
There will be research seminars as well as tutoring of
students. The main goal is to produce a paper of
Bengt’s evaluations of different types of city blocks.
New PhD Student in Geoinformatics
Can Yang, funded by the China Scholarship Council, has
arrived at KTH in March and he will work with Yifang
Ban and Gyözö Gidofalvi on Spatial Temporal Data
Mining.
Awards
At the Position 2015 conference held in Stockholm mid
March, Kent Ohlsson was awarded the price for the
best exam project 2014. Kent was supervised by Patric
Jansson in the previous Division of Geodesy and Geoin-
formatics. The exam project is entitled “Study of Meas-
urement Uncertainty and Time Correlation with
Network RTK in the SWEPOS 35 km Network”. Kent
has also received a grant from the Tryggve Rubin foun-
dation for best exam project in geodesy 2014. Kent
Ohlsson now works with Lantmäteriet in Gävle.
Participation at seminars, conferences, workshops
and teaching activities
On March 26, Ulf Ranhagen and Mats Johan Lundström
visited the Bartlett School of PLanning at the Universi-
ty College London as guest critics in the master course
in Sustainable Urban Strategic Planning. The UCL
students presented their innovative suggestions and
strategies for the development of Stockholm Royal
Seaport. Earlier in March, we had a joint Sustainability
Day with guest lecturers and collaboration between
KTH and UCL students. We are planning further and
closer cooperation between the KTH and UCL courses
in 2015.
On March 10, Ulf Ranhagen, Elisabetta Troglio and Björn
Ekelund presented the preliminary results of the
research project “Klimatsmarta och attraktiva trans-
portnoder” financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. At
the seminar representatives from the municipalities of
Lund, Borås and Uppsala as well as representatives of
Mistra Urban Future and the Swedish Energy Agency
have participated. During the seminar a workshop has
been organized to evaluate the methods used for the
data collection and analysis.
Mohammad Bagherbandi became a new member of NKG
Working Group and participated in the 2015 meetings
of the NKG WG of Geoid and Height Systems and
WG of Geodynamics at University of Olso, Norway.
11-13 March 2015.
Yifang Ban and Jan Haas gave a training course on
Remote Sensing Technology at the University of
Rwanda During Feb. 9-13. The participants were from
variour governmental ministries, NGOs and universi-
ties.
