Inclusive Design: Thinking beyond accessibility
There are many differences that impact the way people experience the digital world. From age and gender, vision and dexterity, to location and education. Each difference affects digital inclusion and experiences. As Drupalists it is our job to build products that are usable by, and inclusive of, as many people as possible. To do so, it is important that we plan for the many differences that make up our users.
This session details the importance of having an inclusive mindset in the creation of our digital projects. It explains how Inclusive Design allow for producing positive experiences for a wider audience. Attendees will learn four simple guidelines that they can follow to apply Inclusive Design principles across all project phases including: ux, development and content creation. Attendees will leave with the tools they need to reach a bigger user base while also building towards an accessible and inclusive digital world.

Inclusive design. It might sound like a rebranding exercise from the Web Acces si bility Marketing Team, but it isn’t. For years inclusive design and research prac tices have been applied to a wide variety of disci plines from indus trial design to the arts, the built envi ronment and more.
What can we learn from this? And how can we apply it to the digital envi ronment in which we work?
Social inno vation, service design and even augmented reality are now presenting real and inter esting oppor tu nities for us as tradi tional web prac ti tioners. Combined with inclusive design prac tices, this opens up a fantastic world of change for both us and the people for whom we design.
So starting with the web, we’ll rein vig orate our passion for diversity and inclusion. Let’s declare this The Age of Awareness!
Lisa is the Prin cipal User Expe rience consultant at Scenario Seven with over ten years of hands-on expe rience on the web. She has a back ground in standards based design and devel opment with the last 7 years focusing on design research, usability, acces si bility and user expe rience strategy.
Lisa believes in an inclusive, holistic approach to user expe rience design that permeates every layer of a site and every role on a team. Her clients range from small, non-profit organ i sa tions through to large multi na tionals such as Macquarie Bank, Microsoft, Sydney Opera House, Qantas and the Brooklyn Museum NYC.
Lisa is an expe ri enced lecturer and conference presenter having spoken at confer ences both locally and abroad in the UK, NZ and the US. She’s a sporadic blogger and a crazy lover of whippets, with two little ones of her own…

Survey of Londoners 2
Barry Fong, Principal Social Policy Analyst at the Greater London Authority (GLA) will take us through the Survey of Londoners 2021-22. Conducted at the end of 2021, so just before the full effects of the cost-of-living crisis began to set in, it was commissioned to provide vital evidence on key social outcomes for Londoners, following the onset of COVID-19 and associated restrictions.
A similar survey was conducted in 2018-19, so this survey would show how things had changed in the capital since then.
Barry will go through some of the key findings from the survey before handing over to Michael Cheetham and Ellen Bloomer from the North East London Integrated Care Board, who collaborated with local authority partners to fund a sample boost for the survey within North East London. They will explain how they used the data, including the analyses, the results and how this impacted strategy and practice.
