Company Background
 Created in 1994 as a spin-off of IBM in Toronto, Canada
 The goal was to become a stand alone company that markets its services to
many companies, including IBM
 In 1996, Celestica became a wholly owned subsidiary of Onex Corporation
 In 1998 Celestica held it’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) and began trading as a
company on the New York stock exchange
 Over the years, Celestica has grown from one to approximately 30 sites, with
over 30,000 employees around the world
o The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System is an vehicle detection
system that enables police to detect.
o Name “LoJack” is created as “contrary of hijack”.
Product of LoJack
 2 main types or models of product:
o VLU7
• Required the police to manually detect the stolen belongings.
o V7E
• VLU7 with early warning system, basically same as VLU7, but the V7E will send message to
the owner whenever the vehicle taken beyond certain radius.
VLU7 and V7E PCB
SMT Process Flowchart
Backend Process Flowchart
Routine Works
 Checklist and Calibrate
o 3 stations to be checklisted:
i. Manual soldering station: soldering iron temperature, leak voltage, and tip-to-ground
resistance.
ii. Depaneling station: circular blade condition, jig movement, and jig grounding condition.
iii. Asssy 3 (end cap screwing) station: Torque value setting.
Thermal Profiling
 To read the Process Window Index (PWI) for the reflow oven.
 Limitation of a process window is ±99%.
 Taken by using KIC Explorer.
Thermal profile for LoJack main model with
PWI of 65%.
Preventive Maintenance
Equipment Problem What it can affect Solution
Pallet Loose jig May disrupt component position Retighten the jig
Lifted screw Affect the thickness of printed solder Retighten the jig
Broken jig May damage the stencil during solder
printing process.
Change with new jig
Pallet holder Broken handle Complicate the works and may cause
injuries
Change the new handle
Magazine Width too wide May cause the panel to fall down Change the magazine width
Width too narrow the magazine cannot hold the panel Change the magazine width
Loose pillar May cause the magazine to break apart Retighten the pillar
Screwing jig High pressure Endcap may be too tight or be damaged Reduce the pressure
Low pressure Endcap does not close the housing
perfectly
Increase the pressure
Worn upholstery Damage the housing during assy #3 Change the upholstery
Microscope Dirty lens Affect the result during inpection Dismantle microscope, clean the lens and
reassemble the microscope.
New Product Introduction (NPI)
The NPI in Celestica is done to introduce the process of the assembly for
new products develop by the client (OEM Company) and ways to test the
products.
it is also a place to find a solution to any problems encountered
VLU9 and V9E PCB
PCB Shield Cover
 PCB shield cover received from supplier is loose when assemble to the PCB.
o Using custom made jigs to reduce the enclosing side of the shield cover.
ATU shield cover. PA shield cover.
 The new jigs required human strength.
o Acceptable for the NPI, but after the product become the main run, major
modification to the jigs must be done.
Manual jig used to assembly the shield cover.
VLU9 family shield cover assembly process.
VLU9 Backend Problems and Solutions
 PCB Tray
o No battery tray or holder on the PCB tray making the battery to vibrate during
shipment and after distributed to the consumers.
o Double side tape is used to hold the battery to prevent it from vibrate.
Battery tray with double side tape.
 End cap
o End cap stopper is bigger than main housing.
o Bigger force required to push the end cap.
• To prevent damage by screwing jig.
o Recommendation has been made which is to review back the end cap design by
decreasing the stopper size.
End cap assembly process.
 Carton
o Defects found during packing process of final product.
o Cable harness found to be bulging and exceed than the height for the sub and main
carton causing difficult to seal them.
o A new sub and main carton with higher height has been made.
Conclusion
 Many benefit learned from this internship in improving my understanding of
the engineering profession, both technically and organizationally.
 Many things have that can be learned during internship such as how to work
as a team, to create good relationship with other staff, the importance of the
soft skill, and the differences between study life and work life.
