Can AI do good? at 'offtheCanvas' India HCI preludeAlan Dix
Invited talk at 'offtheCanvas' IndiaHCI prelude, 29th June 2024.

The world is being changed fundamentally by AI and we are constantly faced with newspaper headlines about its harmful effects. However, there is also the potential to both ameliorate theses harms and use the new abilities of AI to transform society for the good. Can you make the difference?
2. Are there any potential hazards that
could pose a health and safety risk
where your photoshoot will take
place?
As I am taking my photos in open land areas, there will be risks that come with it. The
Penshaw Monument is quite high on a hill and you have to walk up many steep steps to
get to the top, the risks here are that you could potentially fall and injure yourself. The
fields surrounding the Monument are home to many animals such as birds, cows and
sheep so I will have to be careful not to get to close or approach their space. In addition,
Herrington country park has lakes which you could fall in if your not careful and many
people go to this area who have dogs, so you can be too boisterous around them in case
they get uncomfortable. So all of the locations where I am going to be taking my
photographs will in some way create potential hazards, but I will just be aware of my
surroundings.
3. What will you do to ensure
these risks are minimized?
I know all of the areas on each location so if anything
were to happen I would be able to do something about
it. But to stop this from happening, I will have to be
aware of my surrounding and where I go. I will have to
be alert at all times and also make my models aware of
the potential hazards that may surround us.
4. Will the time of day/weather
affect the outcome of your
photo's?
Yes. All of my photographs are going to be taken in the outdoors.
This means that I have to arrange a day where there is
appropriate weather conditions in order to get the best quality
for my photos. I am hoping for a day where the weather is not too
bright, but not too dull. This will give a good contrast of
colours for my images. Therefore, I am choosing a time of day
where the lighting will be appropriate for my camera.
5. Have you considered
background for your photo's?
How will you ensure you get
the background you want?
The majority of my images are going to be of landscapes or of
my models with a landscape behind/in front of them. To ensure
I get the background I want, I will have to consider different
angles and at which point I take my photos. For example, two of
my models standing in front of the Penshaw Monument.
6. Have you considered
lighting? What about the
problems of natural
lighting?
I know that lighting will be a problem for me as my images are all going to be
taken in natural lighting. Is means I might not get the colours I want or the 'filter' I
am after. In order to get high quality images, I am using my own Canon camera
which has different settings to get different sorts of images. This is really useful for
me as it will minimize the changes of bad lighting.
7. Do you need permission to
take photos in the
place/venue you have in
mind?
I don’t need permission to take photographs at my locations except when it will
involve the public. I will have to be aware of people's privacy when taking my
photographs and if I did capture a member of the public, I will let them know the
reason for my photographs and have their consent before I use them.
8. Are other people/crowds likely
to be an issue for you? What
will you do to ensure it won't
spoil your photos?
Yes. As my photos are going to be taken in public places that attract many visitors, there is a
high chance there will be crowds of people. To stop this from spoiling my images, I am going
to be aware of who is in my photograph frame when taking the image. I will only take my
photographs when the background is clear.
9. Are you reliant on lifts, props,
equipment and models? How
have you planned that things
will come together on the
apparent time?
First of all, I am reliant on my location and models as they are specific to what I need in my
photographs. All of my locations are regional which is the whole point of the products, so I am
relying on these places for my images to be taken. In regards of getting there, if I can't get a
lift, I only have to get one bus there. I have arranged a set period where I am available to take
my images with my models so I will arrange a day suitable for everyone and the conditions.
10. Finally, have you thought
about every eventuality?
Yes. I have made a clear enough period of time where I am
available, meaning it can suit everyones availability who is
involved. The location I am using will be there for many
many more years so I don’t have to rush getting there, and I
know where and how to get there. The dates I am looking at
all have good enough weather conditions so all of my
planning has came together to set a few days that are
suitable for everyone meaning we can atleast land on one
day.
