to (1) the Northfield Experiments (Hollymoor Hospital, Northfield [Birmingham], 1942 – 1948), which can be considered as one of the first attempts to rehabilitate people (neurotic soldiers) by means of the ‘therapeutic use of groups’ (Harrison & Clark, 1992, p. 698) and (2) some experimental treatment units during and just after World War II (Mill Hill and Dartford, London) for neurotic soldiers and ex-prisoners of war, initiated by Maxwell Jones (Jones, 1952). Jones is commonly referred to as the ‘father’ of the democratic therapeutic community (Clark, 1965 & 1977; Kennard 1998; Murto 1991 & 1991 b ).
