Halophytes are salt-tolerant plants that grow in saline environments like coastal marshes and mangroves. The research studied two common Venezuelan halophytes - Batis maritima and Salicornia spp. These plants contain protein and minerals and have potential for human consumption. After validating their nutritional properties and safety, the halophytes could be used on their own or combined with other ingredients like flour, pulses, roots or tubers to produce foods. Standardized methods could be used to select, clean, grind and dry the halophytes and other plants to make simple or composite flours. These flours could then be combined to develop foods for both regular consumers and those with special diets.
