This document discusses four reading techniques: skimming, scanning, predicting, and previewing. Skimming involves reading quickly to get the overall idea without focusing on details. Scanning means looking for specific information rather than absorbing everything. Prediction points out what may happen based on a given situation. Previewing reviews titles and headings to understand a text's structure and content before reading in-depth. The document provides examples and definitions of each technique.

2. SKIMMING
Is reading a text to get the gist, the
basic overall idea, rather than
concentrating on absorbing all the
details. For instance, many people
skim read a newspaper article just
to get a quick overview, or a text
could be skimmed to see whether
it's worth reading in detail.
3. SCANNING
Is a reading technique where
the reader looks for specific
information rather than
trying to absorb all the
information. If you're reading
a timetable, say, you want
specific information usually
and so look for something
that is convenient for your
journey plans- when you do
this, you are scanning.
4. PREDICTING
Prediction is point out what can
happen or happen according to
a given situation or event. -This
means that no one reads the
entire row or phrase and
predicts what will follow
without reading.
5. PREVIEWING
Reviewing titles, section headings, and photo
captions to get a sense of the structure and
content of a reading selection
Looking at the title, cover, book jacket
information, graphic support, chapter titles,
headings, embolden words, margin information,
etc., then using this information to determine
what is the predominant structure of the text.
Knowledge of text structure is used as an aid to
comprehension.
