Australia is an island continent located in Oceania, with its capital city of Canberra. Some of its notable features include the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral formation located along the Pacific coast, and Uluru, a massive red sandstone rock formation in the country's Northern Territory. Australia was initially colonized as a penal colony for Britain in 1788, and six former colonies came together to form the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Major cities include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
