Preaching definition from Microsoft WordTo give a talk on a religious or moral subject
To give advice on morality or behavior in a frustratingly (infuriatingly, irritatingly tedious or overbearing way.
To make an opinion or attitude known to others and urge others to share it.Well, I believe preaching is much more than the above. But in order to teach the Word of God you need to know the Word of God. One way you can do a better job of teaching the Word is to know the language of the Bible. How Biblical Languages Work? For example, in the New Testament, the Greek term meaning word (logos) can refer to a variety of things, including a simple statement, a command, the Scriptures, the Gospel message, etc. So how do you know which it means? Context! Context!Take the following English example: “Load the trunks.” What does it mean given the following contexts? At the zoo, load the elephant trunks with medicine. In the living room, load the chests for storage. In the parking lot, load the cars with groceries. At the swimming pool, fill your swimming trunks with candy.Yet many times preachers will be lazy in their interpretation.Lazy InterpretationIn the same way that English language works, so does the Biblical language. There will be times that words in the text will vary in meaning. Therefore, we need to learn the Greek or Hebrew language better. While some of us have not received extensive training in Greek or Hebrew there are tools to accurately study and teach the Scriptures. While many of our friends believe the KJV is adequate for proper understanding, I have discovered we still need to know the meaning of the words. Unfortunately, some pastors and teachers who receive training and acquire tools to accurately study and teach the Scriptures, but later they leave their tools in the tool shed to rust and deteriorate. They set aside the books, the Internet studies and just wing the study of the Scripture. Pastors are called to build up the church.
