Pre-medical students are encouraged to shadow physicians to learn more about the medical profession and ensure they are choosing the right career, as medical schools look for such experience. When shadowing, students should dress professionally, act professionally by waiting to ask questions until after patient visits, and dedicate a few hours per week over several months to gain broad exposure including observing surgeries and routine care, as well as experience in primary care and desired specialties.

Pre-medical students are encouraged to shadow physicians, to learn more about the medical profession
and ensure that they are choosing the right career. Many medical schools look for such experience
when making admissions decisions.
When shadowing physicians, students should wear business attire and act in a professional manner. In
general, this means holding questions until after patient visits or until the end of the day. They should
dedicate at least a few hours each week, over the course of several months, to get the broadest exposure
to the medical setting. If possible, they should also seek out opportunities to observe surgeries and
other exciting events, as well as more mundane levels of care. Additionally, they should try to gain
experience in primary care, as well as their desired specialties.
