As becoming adults, most teenagers will start to
become more sexually active. Unprotected sexual
intercourse may place you and your friends at risk
for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as
the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
For years students like yourselves have been told
about sexually transmitted diseases, but do you
know what are they? how they affect your immune
system? and how to prevent them?
After completing this WebQuest you will have the
answer to both of these questions!
You will work in teams of three or four to create a
health related STD informative brochures. The purpose
of your brochure is to aid your partners in
understanding the health risks associated with sexually
transmitted diseases. In order to accomplish this task
you will have to search information about STDs and
analyze it, to develop ways to prevent unprotected
sexual intercourse. Your brochure will be distributed to
your classmates and also made available to students of
your school.
1) Form groups of three or four.
2) Search information about STDs in the provided web pages.
3) Answer the following questions in a word file using the
references and information provided.
•What is an STD?
•What is the difference between bacteria and a virus?
•What are three bacterial infections and how are they treated?
•What are three viral infections and how are they treated?
•What types of preventative measures can one use to avoid STD's?
4) Analyze the information. Summarize it in a Word file.
5) Develop ways to prevent STDs.
6) Each group should choose one of the following STDs:
-AIDS.
-Chlamydia.
-Herpes.
-Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV).
-Syphilis.
-Gonorrhea.
7) Write a page based on the chosen STD. Include answers to the
following questions:
-Is it Viral or Bacterial?
-What are the signs and symptoms?
-How is it treated?
-What are some ways to prevent the disease?
8) You and your group will develop a health related brochure using
Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher. Your finished brochure must
include statistics, diagrams, the side effects to STDs and resources
where students can go for help.
9) Present the final product to the rest of the class.

questions above. Analyze and summarize the information
found in a Word file.

You will be evaluated taking into account:
-Group participation and organization.
-Research Evidence (Excellent description of STD's disease.
Complete details how it is contracted, prevented and treated.)
-Task completion.
-Use of informatic tools (Microsoft Word and Publisher)
-Oral presentation. (Student were completely prepared and
rehearsed. Posture, eye contact, and voice clarity established
attention from every student in the classroom. Student was able
to answer all questions posed by classmates about their
presentation and the information.)
-Brochure: sequencing of information (Information is organized in
a clear, logical way ), visually pleasing, easy to
read, clear, relevant graphics. Use of photos, diagrams & clipart.
Congratulations on completing the given tasks! You have
successfully contributed to the awareness efforts in the area of
Sexually Transmitted Infections. I hope that you have learned
many things about STDs and how to prevent them. I also hope
that you have learnt to work with others as being co-operative is
a part of everyday life.
