Teen pregnancy is a major social problem with the highest teenage birth rates appearing in lower social strata. It is caused by peer pressure, absent parents, lack of knowledge, and teenage drinking. While some teenage mothers can be successful, like one case in the USA, life as a teenage mother is generally a great burden. Teen pregnancy influences maternal education levels and infant health and development, as well as paternal legal liability. Prevention requires parents to share values with children, explain risks of sex, and talk to children about sex from a young age.
