Language Elements
Cultural Awareness
English speakers use the modal verbs “should”, ought to” and
“had better” to express that they think something is good (or a
bad) idea.
For example:
•Visitors should throw rubbish into the litter bin provided in
every corner of the park.
•You had better throw the rubbish into the litter bin.
•They ought to keep the park clean.
“should”, “had better” and “ought to”
are modal verbs, and modal verbs are
always followed by the simple form of
a verb (infinitive without to)
