INTRODUCTION OF FRANKENSTEIN…..
 Frankenstein is written
by English author Mary
Shelley .
 Shelley started writing
the story when she
was 18 , and the first
edition of the novel
was published in
London on 1January
1818 , When she was
20 .
PASSIVE : WHAT DOES IT MEAN ?
 Not reading visibly to something that might
be expected to produce manifestations of an
emotion or feeling .
 Not participating readily or actively inactive a
passive member of committee .
 Not involving visible reaction or active
participation to play a passive role .
PASSIVE WOMAN CHARACTERS IN
FRANKENSTEIN :
 Agatha
 Elizabeth
 Justine
 Safie
 Mary Wollstonecraft
AGATHA
SILENT BYSTANDER
 Agatha expresses
passiveness when she
witnesses Felix brutally
attacking the monster .
 She did not speak out
about what she had
seen nor did she try to
stop Felix .
CONTINUE…..
 She is the woman who was used as the first
teacher of the monster for healthy human
interaction .
 She was the monster’s primary teacher in
sensitivity and virtue .
ELIZABETH
THE WAITING WIFE
 By far the most
mention female in the
book , Frankenstein ,
she is revered as
having a gentle
character .
 She is victimized by
Frankenstein’s view of
her as a possession
and her role in society
as the subservient to
males .
CONTINUE…..
 Elizabeth waited for victor her entire life .
 She was passive in such a way that when he
didn’t respond to her letters she did nothing
about it .
 When victor finally came back she did
whatever he wanted her to do .
JUSTINE
PASSIVE TILL DEATH
 Justine was a very
unimpressive
character.
 She was hardly even
vocal in the story .
 Her passive attitude
led her to be
wrongfully accused of
the murder of William
Frankenstein.
CONTINUE…..
 Her passive actions lead to her execution .
 She knew that she was not the murderer ,
but failed to make an attempt to prove her
innocence .
 In reality , if she had made an effort to
investigate the case Justine could have at
least provide evidence that she was not
guilty .
SAFIE
THE PARTIALLY PASSIVE WOMAN
 Safie came from Turkey ,
to England with her father .
 While there she fell in love
with Felix .
 Her father then wanted
Safie to come back to
Turkey with him.
 She refused to leave with
him because she was
head over heels in love
with Felix .
 In this way Safie wasn’t
very passive because she
was willing to tell her father
what she really wanted .
MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT
THE REAL SISTER SUFFRAGETTE
 Mary shelley’s mother ,
Mary Wollstonecraft , was
the first feminist ever .
 “ She drew woman of all
classes who were
physically and
psychologically manacled
in marriage , from
husbands and lovers who
mistreat woman to
mistresses , wives ,
daughters , prostitutes and
laboring woman who suffer
at the hands of men .”
CONCLUSION …..
 Even though created by a female writer ,
each of these female characters have roles
of subservience to males .
 This was also the role of woman during this
particular age in history .
 Woman were considered possession and
had limited , if any , rights .
