Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico in 1519 and conquered the Aztec empire by 1521, aided by local translator La Malinche and superior Spanish weapons and technology. In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to an Indian peasant where a former Aztec temple stood, creating a mestizo figure that became known as the "Patroness of the Americas." From 1791-1804, a massive slave rebellion in the French colony of Saint-Domingue led to independence and the establishment of Haiti after Napoleon's forces were defeated.

By the mid-1600s, the Chesapeake colonies were highly prosperous due to tobacco, but this prosperity came at the cost of Native American lands and the environment.

Editor's Notes
Aztec mythology was awaiting the return of their creator God, Quetzalcoatl, when Cortes arrived with his powerful and impressive weapons the Aztecs had never seen before. However, once Cortes and his men started to commit evil actions, the Aztecs realized they were far from gods. La Malinche was an Aztec woman who doubled as Cortes’ translator and lover. She was viewed as a traitor by the Aztecs because she helped Cortes to interview the Aztecs and learn of how Montezuma was secretly detested. She also bore the first Mestizo child. Also, there was political unrest within the empire as the current Aztec emperor, Montezuma, was not popular. Cortes took advantage of the situation by getting Montezuma’s opponents to help him over throw the emperor. Disease was also a powerful weapon in the defeat of the Aztecs as the Iberian diseases quickly decimated the virgin Aztec population. Cprtes and his men believed their actions were sanctioned by God; that they were Christianizing the “heathens.”
After the conquering of the Americas, the native populations were forcefully converted to Christianity. However, many Indians continued to worship their gods using Christian names as covers. Where Juan Diego said to have seen the Virgin was on the top of a site that was formerly a temple for an Aztec God. Because of this, when Juan Diego claimed to have seen the Virgin and said that she wanted a church built there for her, the local Bishop was in doubt. Then, three days later, the Virgin reappeared as Diego was showing a local Bishop his cloak. After this, the Church had to accept this meztizo Virgin. Because of her native origin and place of discovery, La Virgen de Guadalupe is of high importance in Mexico, and her church, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is in Mexico City today. This saint represents an interesting combination of Iberian Christianity and native population rituals.
This revolt was very bloody and gruesome. It started between the black slaves and white Iberian plantation owners, but soon it became an international affair with France, Spain and England involved. Before the Haitian revolution was over, slavery would be abolished in Saint Domingue, the plantation system destroyed, and the French rule brought to an end. This revolution was complicated because it sent mixed signals to the Americas. “To the creole elites who led the struggles for Latin American independence on the mainland, the Haitian revolution, with its slave rebellion, race war and social upheaval, was also a cause of anxiety.” (Winn, 80). The creole elites feared independence might mean an end to their own privileged positions.
