The Need for Co-working
• Premise: “The teams within a complex social
network or organisation who most need to
collaborate are those where the unifying
purpose of the whole system drives the need to
to work together in some way”.
• Co-working takes the form of either:
1. The need to co-plan, co-deliver or co-learn-from
their work together.
2. The ability to learn from one another because
their work is similar.

Questions
Co-planning
Do both teams need to be co-conceived or co-planned?
• Both teams are initiated by the same event.
• When you launch one task you have to launch the other.
• Both teams work on the same flow of products, services or clients.
• The teams have to share limited-capacity equipment or the same key skilled people.
• The teams should plan their work in the same way or using the same planning system
7
Co-learning
Does the work of both teams need to be confirmed or checked

•Their work combine to satisfy a single purpose or end-

•You can only confirm the successful completion for one team
when you confirm the successful completion for the other.
•The teams can only be checked or tested together as a
whole.
•The quality of the first affects the ability to ensure the
quality of the second
•The method of evaluation or judging success is the same for
both teams.
Co-delivery
Should both team’s work be coordinated or done

• Both teams’ work methods and process flows are
physically inter-linked and enmeshed together.
•The doing of the work needs to be synchronised or
coordinated in time.
•Both teams’ processes and procedures are the same.
•The teams use the same type of tools, technology or
equipment.
•Their members require the same education or
experience.

The total Tricord Score is out of 15.
• 0-5 : Need to identify with and appreciate the work of each other.
However little need for formal collaborative working processes.
• 5-10: They are part of a higher-level system and/or can learn from
one another. There is benefit in formal collaborative working
processes.
• 10-15: Their work is closely related. They should work together
closely and collaboratively, seeing themselves part of a wider single
team. Close collaborative processes are essential.

The total Tricord Score is out of 15.
• 0-5 : They are not really part of a higher level system. Need not be
co-organised.
• 5-10: They are part of a higher-level system. There is benefit to
being co-managed at the next level.
• 10-15: They are closely related. They are two parts of a single unit
of whole work. They should be co-organised, perhaps within a
single team.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 An organisation is a whole socio-technical system. It is built up from sub-systems, which are in turn built up from sub-sub-systems, like Russian dolls.
