Morgan Walsh Behavioral Approaches To Conflict
People approach conflicts in one of three ways: Passive Assertive Aggressive
THE CONFLICT...
Who will get the last slice of the delicious Costco pizza?? Who will get to eat the last slice of delicious Costco Pizza???
PASSIVE People… -want to avoid conflict -fail to express their honest feelings -want to appease others -think their thoughts aren’t important -might complain but do nothing to raise the issue.
The PASSIVE person… -relinquishes the last slice without a word of protest even though they are starving and the other person has already eaten two slices, a hot dog, AND a churro.
AGGRESSIVE People… Express their thoughts often in an inappropriate manner Goal is domination and winning Often humiliate, degrade, or belittle the other party Want to win the argument at all costs.
The AGGRESSIVE person… -Takes the last slice even though they aren’t hungry and are allergic to cheese and tells the other person they shouldn’t eat it because they are fat.
ASSERTIVE People… are direct and honest but appropriate at the same time Value communication and mutuality Want to resolve conflict in a positive way Seek a win-win or no lose solution
An ASSERTIVE person… -Offers to split the pizza in half because, who the heck can eat a whole slice of costco pizza anyways, it’s HUGE! And besides, this way they’ll have room for a churro for dessert!
Assertion Isn’t Always the Answer Although being assertive is usually the best way to go, it’s not always the answer. Try it first and if it doesn’t work you may have to be a bit more aggressive
