This document summarizes research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on the effects of drugs on the brain. It contains several images from NIDA research depicting: 1) How drugs affect brain activity in different regions over time as shown through positron emission tomography scans. 2) Long term changes in brain metabolism in cocaine abusers compared to non-abusers. 3) Evidence that drug addiction has long term consequences by altering brain structure and function even after periods of abstinence.
