Moldova declared independence in 1991 and struggles with high poverty rates. It lost control over its eastern border and main industries due to conflict with Transnistria. The 1998 Russian economic crisis also severely damaged the economy. While poverty rates were nearly 80% in the late 1990s, rates dropped until the global financial crisis caused them to rise again. Many Moldovans have emigrated or moved within Moldova to find work as unemployment increased following job losses. Over half a million Moldovans now live and work abroad, sending money home that contributes about a third of Moldova's GDP.

9. Migration Over half a million of Moldovans reside outside the country, working in jobs that earn them a meager pay and very little protection. These migrants produce c. one third of the GNP of the Republic of Moldova.
