3. Welcome to Sussex
Welcome to Sussex Why Sussex?
Why Sussex?
T he University of Sussex is a leading research
institution with strengths across a broad range
of disciplines. Many of our faculty are academics of world
renown, working at the cutting edge of their disciplines.
The growth in the numbers of postgraduate applications
and admissions to Sussex over recent years reflects the
quality and excellence of what we offer.
The University’s tradition of interdisciplinarity is
reflected in the organisation of graduate studies,
which brings subjects together, encourages
intellectual exchange across disciplines, and
creates a sense of community for graduate
students. The University arranges seminars,
promotes conferences, welcomes well-known
research visitors from overseas, fosters research
clusters and circulates research papers and
other publications.
We run a graduate assistantship scheme for
doctoral students. Under this scheme, which
provides financial support at least equal to
a home/EU fee, doctoral students in many
subjects have the opportunity of doing paid
undergraduate teaching alongside their research
work. This is particularly attractive to students
who are contemplating a career in academia.
Sussex has had a strong international focus
since its foundation and has academic links
with every continent. The University is home
to researchers and students from over 120
countries. We have a diverse student population,
enriching the experience of all who study here.
The University campus is situated in beautiful
parkland on the edge of Brighton and is entirely
self-contained. The friendly and informal campus
life is a reflection of the community at large;
Brighton is a tolerant, lively and exciting place.
We are committed to our reputation as a
world-leading university for graduate studies
and research. In this prospectus we have tried to
provide the information that will help you decide
whether Sussex is the right place for you. Please
do not hesitate to contact our postgraduate
admissions staff if you have any further queries.
