Riccardo Agosto conducted action research with Poliferie, an Italian nonprofit organization, to understand how service design could help connect the organization and service levels. Through observation, interviews and co-design, he found challenges in information sharing, coordination, engagement, and team building. He prototyped a collaborative digital tool to guide multi-phase project development and management absorption of design practices. The research concluded service design can enable facilitation, project management and organizational impact for social organizations.

Greater Portland Inc is an economic development organization that markets the Greater Portland region to attract companies looking to expand or relocate. They generate business leads, manage prospects, and provide services to help communities improve their economic competitiveness. While their efforts have led to over 2,800 jobs and $152 million in income, software and media prospects have declined in recent years. Most industrial projects require existing buildings, while office projects are exclusively seeking existing space. Manufacturing, especially metals and machinery, has seen an uptick in interest.

GOC is a Dutch consultancy and training firm focused on the creative industry. In 2013, GOC researchers traveled to the future year 2020 to identify new competencies needed in the media industry. They returned with insights about essential skills for 2020 like curating, creating, communicating, and converting, as well as the growing need for cooperative skills and focus on audio/visual. However, companies and schools often resist changes by denying trends and downplaying needed adaptations. To prepare for 2020, GOC recommends starting training now on essential skills and lifelong learning, but acknowledges it is difficult for organizations and individuals to resist mental shortcuts that prolong the status quo.
