Portugalete is a town located west of Bilbao in northern Spain's Basque Country region. Three of the oldest streets in Portugalete are Santa Maria, Coscojales, and Middle Street. The Basilica of Santa Maria was constructed in 1492 and is an example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture. Portugalete is also home to the world's oldest transporter bridge, built in 1893 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Major events in Portugalete include the San Roque Festivals held annually in August.
