The document provides details about the restoration of the home of William Sinnickson Sharp built in 1862 in Salem, New Jersey. The living room contained plaster cornice moldings, an ornate mantel mirror, and an electrified gasolier. Walls had been installed in 1948 dividing the large living room, which needed to be removed and damaged plaster repaired, with apprentices learning mold making techniques to recreate missing architectural elements.

3) Throughout the remodel, the designers incorporated polished design elements like hickory floors, light gray walls, and dark window trims to create a cohesive and sophisticated aesthetic, while using vibrant jewel tones to define individual rooms.

5. KINETIC METAL STABILE
DEVELOPMENT
The conception of the metal stabile
began with loose sketches of shapes I
wished to incorporate. The sketch
shown here shows the initial wire
frame I was considering.
I developed this study model from the
sketch above.
6. KINETIC METAL STABILE
DEVELOPMENT
The final model was constructed out
of galvanized steel using telescoped
pieces stitched together to obtain the
shape of the base.
13. BEHAVIORAL SETTING
DEVELOPMENT
The study model was constructed to
help visualize the house three
dimensionally.
This sketch shows an overhead view
of my original idea for the house and
landscape.
14. BEHAVIORAL SETTING
DEVELOPMENT
The final model was created
using thick matte board and
landscaped with cardboard for
terrain and baby’s breath for
trees and shrubs.
15. BEHAVIORAL SETTING
INTERIOR
The downstairs interior
features a staircase, grand
piano, fireplace, aquarium,
and sitting space.
The second-story interior
features a geometric window
arrangement allowing only
indirect sunlight into the
room.
21. BEHAVIORAL SETTING
The front of a stone colored residence with a blue roof stands before us. We are facing southeast,
standing in the front lawn, as the breeze crosses our faces bringing with it the smells and tastes of fried
chicken and corn bread from the kitchen (located on the western side of the house). It is late afternoon
as we approach the large hickory door. On either side of the door long skinny vertical windows
composed of sculpted glass reflect the afternoon sun in such a way that a prism effect appears across the
pane. Upon opening the heavy hickory door, the distinctive smell of the house becomes apparent. The
very pale blue carpeting across the entrance hall in the living room has evidently been cleaned with an
apple cinnamon flavored cleaning solution, which is the most noticeable smell at first entering the
house. Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending softly plays from the sound system in the living room.
The entrance consists of pearl colored tiles, which create an opalescent shine and reflect the diffracted
light coming through the two windows on either side of the door. Below these windows are arrangements
of orchids, which emit a pleasant fragrance.
We now turn to face the living room. To our right is the circular shaped kitchen, and just around the
corner, on the northeast side of the house, supper is cooking. The pearl colored tile continues to the
edge of the kitchen where tile merges into an oak floor. The light reflects off the blue roof above the
kitchen and enters the wide upright windows that exist on the roof where one section drops off and
another begins. The effect is crescent shaped patterns of blue light gleaming across the ceiling. Right
outside the kitchen wall, on the southwest side, wind chimes sound creating an inviting environment for
a meal. The furniture consists of a medium toned oak finish. Four chairs surround a round table placed
near the southwest wall, opposite the refrigerator, oven, and stove. On the eastern wall the sink and
dishwasher are positioned.
The fragrance of the cooking chicken follows us as we head into the living room where there is a
configuration of lounge chairs, a couch, a coffee table, an aquarium on the far wall, and a sound system
set up next to the aquarium. The dominant sound and smell again become the Vaughan Williams
classical music and the apple cinnamon scent. Light enters through upright windows in the ceiling and
surrounding windows on the southern walls. The furniture is upholstered in navy fabric and surrounds a
deep burgundy oval coffee table. A floral arrangement rests on the center of the table and contains the
brightest colors in the room and therefore, stands out with remarkable contrast.
SENSORY SCENARIO
22. BEHAVIORAL SETTING
We then exit the house into the backyard, where we hear the sounds of the fountain splashing and feel
the evaporative cooling from both the fountain and the pool beyond the fountain. The off-white textured
concrete leads us around the fountain to a shaded area where white poolside furniture is arranged.
Beyond the semicircular lap pool and circular hot tub, the landscaping of the backyard envelops most of
the walk. Trees, bushes, shrubs, and flowers continue from the small separating wall at the edge of the
pool walk to the fence on the western edge of the property. The buzzing of bees, the chirping of birds,
the song of the wind chimes fill the air. An open field of grass exists on the eastern side of the yard,
where the children enjoy playing games and running around.
Now we head back into the house and find our way to the bedroom, which is located up a flight of stairs
west of the living room. The walls of the bedroom are a deep mahogany, and the carpeting is soft, fine
and beige. The bedspread on the king-sized bed is forest green and silky. The smell of vanilla fills the
room as the scented candles burn in the adjacent bathroom. Light enters the bedroom indirectly
through Venetian blinds, which cover the giant windows on the eastern and western walls. On the
southern wall a door leads to a walk-in closet. The closet is lit by a fluorescent light fixture, which
makes a diamond shape on the ceiling. The closet is spacious and comfortable to move about in.
We move back into the bedroom and find on the opposite wall to the bathroom a wide opening leading to
the bathroom. The floor in the bathroom is ivory colored with patterns of gold. There is a skylight over
our heads and to our right where the sink and mirror are positioned. The natural lighting gives us an
accurate depiction of our appearance. On the far wall away from the bedroom is the bath, which is also
ivory white. The shower is to our left as we enter the room. It is surrounded by glass with golden leaves
growing up from the base. The vanilla fragrance from the candles is stronger as we walk about the
bathroom. The pleasant sound from the radio-alarm clock begins to sound from the bedroom, signifying
the chicken is finished cooking and the time for this tour has drawn to an end. Thank you for visiting
my design home.
SENSORY SCENARIO
24. KINETIC WOOD MODEL
DEVELOPMENT
My initial idea was to create a
game that involved keeping a
ball rolling down a track until it
fell into a bucket at the end of
the track. To the right are
sketches of two preliminary
designs I considered.
25. KINETIC WOOD MODEL
DEVELOPMENT
These sketches show a side and
top view of a more developed
plan for the model including
some tentative dimensions,
ideas for a handle and ball
release, and methods to connect
the pieces of the track.
26. KINETIC WOOD MODEL
DEVELOPMENT
The final model was constructed with-
out the use of glue. All connections
were made using pegs. Every other
one of the platforms rotates as shown
in the picture.
