California Polypody is a creeping perennial fern native to coastal California and Baja Mexico. It grows on rocky slopes, cliffs, streambanks and coastal bluffs in part shade to full shade where it receives moisture. The fern spreads via rhizomes and has deltate to ovate leaflets arranged pinnately on compound leaves. It is summer deciduous and dies back completely, relying on underground rhizomes to resprout the following season. California Polypody is well suited for use in shaded rock gardens, as a ground cover, or growing on vertical surfaces like tree bark or rock faces where it adds an old-fashioned woodsy appearance.
