POETRY?
•refers to the type of literature
that uses rhyme and meter.
•The Tagalog word for ‘poetry’
is panulaan or simply tula
(‘poem’).
•Poetry is the opposite of prose,
which is the ordinary form of
spoken or written language.

A POEM?
A piece of writing that
usually has figurative
language and that is
written in separate lines
that often have a
repeated rhythm and
sometimes rhyme.

•refers to the way a poem
looks on the page.

26. FORM may consist of:
1. Lines – rows of words in a poem
2. Stanzas – groups of lines separated by a space.
Stanzas are like a “paragraphs “ of a poem.
3. Couplet – pairs of rhyming lines.
4. Quatrains – stanzas consisting of four lines

- a short three-lined Japanese
poem with a syllable pattern of 5 -

- This poem is related to Haiku
but has additional two lines
making it 31 syllables.
A tanka poem is only 5 lines with
syllables in each order is 5, 7, 5,
7, 7.
