The word clock comes from a word that meant bell. Before the invention of clock, a man knows
as a clock-jack used to ring a large bell in the castle to tell everyone the time. Man was
also able to estimate the time by means of a sundial or an hourglass containing sand.
The clock industry originated in the Middle Ages in Europe. The clocks were
made by blacksmiths. The main principles in the design of these clocks are still used in
mechanical clocks today.
The earliest clock with a dial is said to have been made in Italy in 1335. The
French royal family installed clocks in all the rooms of their palaces. It was rumoured that King Charles
VI of France went mad trying to set all the clocks in his palace at the correct time.
During the fifteenth century, the size of the clock was reduced. This led to the manufacture of
pocket watches. The first pocket watch is believed to have been made in 1510 by Peter Heinlein in
Germany. One of the most complex watches ever made was a French watch that combined everything
that was scientifically and mechanically possible in a watch. This watch took four years to make and it
included a small chime, minute and hour counters, the day of the week, the date, moon phases, seasons, a
barometer, a thermometer and the time in 125 cities throughout the world!
Wristwatches were only introduced towards the end of the nineteenth century and were exclusive
to women. It took about thirty years for men to start wearing wristwatches, finding them more convenient
than pocket watches.
