Last week we created scripts for open ended questions with children, often being able to guide children through putting words to questions and fears and misconceptions is the first part of developing coping skills. Sometimes finding the right words to guide the child with, or even for the child to find a word that they've never before used within the context of a loss, is even more challenging.
This week we'll be finding creative ways to guide children through word discovery--finding a therapeutic project that we can create a positive memory through, and even help children develop words that they otherwise wouldn't have in this context.
One example (one of my favorites, and truly one of the most beautiful I've seen in action) is the creation of luminaries shared in the
Camp Erin video.
Kids who aren't ready to express grief through words can experience much needed therapeutic input as they create something very personal and prepare to memorialize the person who's died. The words may not be present, but the actions and feelings are very much present, and it's tasks such as these that often are the first step in healing for children!
Find and share a single activity that is therapeutic in nature, and can be used to help a child successfully cope with a death. An activity manageable (with support) by a child, meaning it "speaks" to them without requiring them to verbally share their experience. What is a positive way for a child to recreate (even if mentally) and save a memory? What types of activities can give a child closure (even if that closure is simply that the child isn't alone in their grief)?
Pinterest
is a terrific place to start looking-- and you can start pinning what you find for your Memory Box project due later in the course.

In the past, many theorists and researchers did not describe a child’s reaction to death as “grief.” A young child’s reaction to death appeared to be comparably less stressful and short-lived. According to recent research, however, children – even infants – do experience acute “grief,” and sometimes, the feelings are even life-threatening. As a result, it is very important for a child, who is experiencing grief, to be provided with opportunities to release pent-up emotions and relive memories through actions, feelings, and/or words (Meier & Eddy, 2011). It can be difficult, however, especially for children, to express their grief in words. Sometimes, the words may just not come. A child who isn’t ready to express his/her grief in words can experience therapeutic input by creating a personal project to memorialize the person who has died. For example, the child can ...

Returning Warriors Organization (RWO)
Returning Warriors Organization (RWO) is a rapidly-growing association in Washington, DC. Last year, Vietnam veteran William Jones has held the CEO role of the organization which has more than doubled in membership. It now has over 3,000 members and has added Cassandra Jenkins as Director. Prior to the rapid growth, most of RWO’s records have been in paper format. However, the organization’s business manager, Regina Collins, has emphasized the need for a computerized system to help meet its information needs and to manage activities.
In addition to Ms. Collins, the organization employs a part-time administrative assistant, Martha Reynolds. Martha performs clerical duties such as filing, recordkeeping, answering phone calls, and producing the monthly newsletter to members using Word on a Windows personal computer. Shawn Johnson is a Desert Storm veteran who performs maintenance activities part-time in the evenings. Robert Duncan serves in a part-time paid marketing coordinator position, overseeing 25 volunteers who meet every Tuesday to prepare contribution letters to send to the membership.
The main concern of the RWO is with registering new members. When a prospective member wants to join, Mr. Jones, Ms. Jenkins or Ms. Collins speaks on the phone or in person with that person to establish rapport. Then, the person is mailed pre-numbered envelops for use in regular contributions to the RWO. Most contributions are made to the RWO using these envelops, although about 15% of each collection comes from cash and checks from non-member contributors. Additionally, RWO has a capital improvement campaign to purchase a building (and stop leasing) for the organization. Contributions to this fund are collected at fund-raising campaigns held once per month. The cost of acquiring the property, paving it, and making it ready for use is $500,000. RWO obtained a bank loan to finance this project, and makes monthly payments from the funds received at its fundraisers. As contributions are made, the remaining balance is reduced.
Since RWO is recognized as a 501(c) 3, non-profit organization, all contributions are tax-deductible. In January, RWO send out a summary report of all contributions made using envelops during the previous year for use in income tax preparation. RWO must also keep track of records of all its fund raising campaigns.
Mr. Jones and Ms. Jenkins have hired your small, information systems consulting firm to look into the possibility of developing an information system for RWO. This system will address the organization’s revenue resources and its record keeping requirements. Your contract has a six month turnaround time to complete the analysis and design of a feasible solution.

Response to the Attacks of 9/11
The events of 9/11 devastated our Nation's sense of security and changed the outlook of law enforcement forever. Aside from the impact the attacks had on this Nation; be it the death toll, the economic impact, etc., law enforcement faced other unknown challenges on that fateful day. Several law enforcement and private sector agencies ranging from the New York City Police Department to FEMA arrived at Ground Zero only to find that their ability to communicate was severely inhibited due to incompatible equipment and fragmented technologies.
For this assessment, please research the communication challenges law enforcement agencies may have faced, be it internal, or in relation to other agencies, when responding to a particular disaster, either natural or man-made. Write a 3−5 page paper that:
Details the facts of the incident and the specific communication problems encountered
The consequences of those problems in terms of lives lost, etc.
The steps taken by the relevant agencies to address those problems. If no steps were taken, what steps should be taken?

The Urban Planning Council is a governmental land use planning authority with responsibility for regulation and planning of property development in a Middle Eastern country. The organization carries out reviews of private sector land use master plans, providing input and advice as well as issuing permits. The organization also prepares master plans in-house in response to market demands for social housing. Finally, the Urban Planning Council is responsible for the creation, evolution, dissemination and implementation of various planning regulations, guide manuals and design standards to be adhered to by all entities in the sector.
The mandates handed down to the Urban Planning Council by the higher levels of government are:
To ensure sustainable and appropriate development of land to meet social, economic and cultural needs;
To develop and curate the regulatory framework in which these activities take place; and
To ensure training of and knowledge transfer to local citizen employees in order to comply with short- and long-term goals for reduced dependency on expatriate skill sets (this mandate is common to all governmental organizations in the country).
According to Bryson (2011), a strategic issue is a “fundamental policy question or challenge affecting [the] mandates, missions, values…” of the organization. Two potential challenges that the organization may face within the strategic planning process are detailed here:
Firstly, the mandates of other governmental and semi-governmental organizations (key stakeholders) are not always clear or static. The government frequently rearranges and/or merges departments within different stand-alone agencies, in an effort to clarify and rationalize their mandates or to simplify the regulatory environment as a whole in the country. This applies to utility service companies, transport authorities, county-level municipal organizations and sector-specific regulatory entities. In the past 10 years, such changes have happened at least once per year at some level.
Secondly, the government has also been known to declare expatriate recruitment bans from time to time, in addition to ordering the removal of a percentage of existing expatriate employees. During such bans, which can last for a year or two, no government entity is allowed to permanently employ any foreign workers or professionals. This is done in an effort to ensure the highest possible levels of citizen employment. In this context, the term citizen refers to a national of the country. Such citizenship is only available by hereditary birth-right.

The emerging approaches to management in public organizations stems from the challenges created by the market dynamics, including globalization and advances in technology. Strategic planning for success has therefore assumed greater importance for managers of public institutions.
The key elements of the strategic planning process depends to a large extend on the model one adopts (whether conventional, issues-based, alignment, inspirational etc.). The policy process involves constant deliberations, bargaining and negotiations by politicians and other interest groups (Moore, 1995; Van Horn, et al., 2001). Therefore critical elements in strategic planning for public organizations include stakeholders, resource alignment and more importantly how to deliver sustainable outcomes.
Strategic planning is a set of managerial decisions that determine the long term survival of an institution according to Whaelen and Hunger (2005). It is critical to constantly monitor and elevate the external opportunities and threats taking into consideration the internal strengths and weaknesses.
In this regard, stakeholder analysis is critical to the success of strategic planning for success because it provides the opportunity for the institution to respond adequately to their needs and allow for institutional relevance and achievement of strategic objectives. Resource alignment is also important as it allows for the effective deployment of resources to meet objectives.
The strategic planning for Parliament of Ghana which I coordinate, takes into consideration all emerging issues into consideration in developing strategic initiatives particularly the issue stakeholder consultation because as an institution representing the people, the institutional relevance is determined by the ability to respond to the needs of citizens.

Response with 2-3 sentences to each one below
1. Goals and Objectives are a vital part of your grant proposal. Goals are extensive statements with a long-term, ideal outcome in mind. Most proposals have no more than three goals (Community Toolbox, 2015). Objectives are detailed statements that will show the reviewer exactly how you plan to achieve your goals (Community Toolbox, 2015).
SMART objectives are well written objectives.
Specific
- Tell how much of what is to be accomplished in a given time-frame.
Measurable
- Information concerning the objective can be gathered, identified, or acquired from records.
Achievable
- The objectives are not only possible, the organization more than likely will be able to make them happen.
Relevant to the mission
- The organization has a clear perception of how these objectives fit in with the vision and mission of the organization.
Timed
- A timeline has been developed by the organization by which the objectives will be completed.
Challenging
- The organization is stretched to set its aims on important changes that are essential to members of the community (Community Toolbox, 2015).
A proposal was written for Lightsville Public Schools based on four focus areas developing specific activities based on each need, and creating measurable tools to evaluate whether or not students and parents are succeeding (Colorado Grants, 2015). Although most proposals have no more than three goals, this proposal had four. Each of the four goals relate directly to the four focus areas described above (Colorado Grants, 2015). The goals were well written and specific and the objectives coincided. The objectives were followed by the SMART format. There is no question as to what was to be accomplished.
Goal 1: Students who participate in the programs at the learning center will improve their academic achievement. Goal 1 had two objectives and they both coincided with the goal.
The Read to Succeed Project’s goal, in my opinion told what the goal was, but it did not grab my attention to where I wanted to read further. The goal states: “The goal of the Read to Succeed! Project is to enable at risk students and students with learning and reading disabilities to improve their reading skills to the point where they can succeed in school and develop the reading skills that will prepare them for high school and post-secondary education (Kurzweil Educational Systems , 2002).”
I would have worded the goal to say: The goal of the Read to Succeed! Project is to enable at risk students and students with learning and reading disabilities to advance their reading skills to the point where they are confident that they can succeed in school and their reading skills are developed to the point that they are confidently prepared for high school and post-secondary education.
Objective 1 stated: “Providing a measurable increase in reading speed, comprehension, and reading attention span. The objective is that the students will do.

In that time, her team has repeatedly employed a consistent set of techniques and procedures to study preschoolers as they interact in a number of settings. The procedures involve volunteer mothers bringing their children to the university child development lab for a an observed "play session". Settings in which the observations have occurred so far include the university pre-school, affluent local day-care centers, and a pre-kindergarten program being offered in the neighborhood school district. All of these settings were fairly racially homogenous.
Daphne has just learned that a friend of a friend can help her gain research access in the near future to preschoolers in an unusually racially diverse but impoverished preschool setting. Daphne decides she has no time to prepare a formal research proposal before embarking on the study. 'Besides,' she thinks, 'this study should go just like all the others we've done.'
Is Daphne leaving herself open to problems in this situation, or is she safe moving ahead with no formal proposal, given how familiar she is with the study techniques and procedures?

Women have a long history of being considered inferior to men. However, during the middle to the late 20th century, the women’s rights movement began to improve the plight of women in Western society by granting them access to societal positions previously held only by men.
Some people claim that women have finally achieved equality with men in the 21st century; others are not convinced.
How will you describe the status of equality between men and women in contemporary Western culture?
Do you see any major areas where women are still discriminated against on a large scale? If so, give at least two examples. If not, rationalize your views.

As a result of having a different perspective than Thomas Hobbes and the state of nature, John Locke also views the need for enacting a social contract differently. Locke did not see humans as warring in a state of nature as Hobbes had. Instead, Locke's state of nature could be explained as a perfect place where people had the freedom to choose their own paths in life so long as it did not infringe upon others.
Locke viewed people as being kind toward one another as a result of the Law of Nature, which was a result of virtues from God. Under the Law of Nature, people were equal and would be treated as such because of their morals stemming from their belief in God. By the same token, Locke acknowledged that having liberty in the state of nature was not synonymous with a "license" to do what we pleased, as, "no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions…"(Locke, section 6). Only when a man has done something wrong can another man have power over him in the state of nature and this power cannot be used excessively, and only using calm reason and conscience (Locke, section 8)
Locke also understood the need for private property for men. Private property was the combining of a person using his (her) own labor along with the natural resources in nature to produce something. When a person used their abilities to produce something, they should have the right to that final product. However, a person could not claim more than what should be considered their own "fair share." In other words, owning excessive private property would now breach the Law of Nature. Because of the desire for private property and the want to maintain it, men would give up the freedom of the state of nature, relying upon a government for protection.
To me, Locke's state of nature is more in line with my own thinking. People are not naturally evil and warring, but instead more virtuous, whether stemming from beliefs in God, their own upbringing, or just naturally moral. As a result, the only need for people to enter into a social contract is to settle disputes and not for self preservation as Hobbes suggested.
Although I accept (interpret?) the notions of a state of nature from both Locke and Hobbes as theoretical, Locke's description seems closer to what I understand as reality. His description of the importance of property is not only unique from Hobbes', but also makes sense. People "like their things" and do not want them taken away. This seems very natural in society today. Locke's views were instrumental not only in our "re-establishment" of the state of nature when the American colonists declared their independence, but was also instrumental in the writing of the Bill of Rights.

Respond to Biology Questions: Human Health and Disease from an Evolutionary Perspective Discussion
Activity:
Throughout the last couple of decades scientists have been taking a closer look at human health and disease through the lens of evolution. From hypothesizing as to the benefits of your body’s fever response to infections (see Function of Fever and Annals of Internal Medicine), to maintaining overall human health (see Michael Rose's 55), to the burgeoning science of aging (see Evolutionary Theories of Aging and Longevity), evolutionary thinking can be used to develop testable hypotheses. For example, some scientists are using evolutionary biology concepts to determine why some bacteria and viruses are highly virulent while others are not, living in their hosts with few, if any, ill effects. Please watch these brief videos "Cholera: Domesticating Disease" [Video File] [04 Min 50 Sec] and "Double Immunity" [Video File] [02 Min 30 Sec] and then develop responses to the question below.

According to IDEA, what do the terms Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) mean?
LRE environment is when students with disabilities that should be educated to the maximum extent appropriate with peers without disabilities. FAPE requires free education that is appropriate for qualified persons with disability in the school district no matter the extent of the person’s disability.
How does inclusion fit into the big picture of LRE?
Inclusion means all individuals regardless of ability should be able to participate in the same environment with appropriate support, no one is excluded.
Discuss the legal ramifications of the LRE provision as mandated by IDEA, the relative and dynamic properties of LRE, and the collaborative dimension of implementing LRE for students in special education.
”The
case law increasingly uses the LRE standard to require school districts to exhaust attempts to serve students with disabilities in the general education classroom (Keuhne, 1998).
The relative and dynamic properties of LRE makes sure students are placed appropriately and teachers keep in mind that placements for students can change according to the system evaluations. The collaborative dimension of implementing LRE for students in special education makes sure a team of members come together to discuss what is best for the student to successfully learn.
In addition, discuss any personal experiences you may have had as part of an IEP team for a student where LRE was determined, or any insights you might have on ensuring LRE and FAPE for all student. I have not attended an IEP meeting but know that team comes together to discuss goals and strategies to ensure the child is successful in a regular classroom setting.
Elizabeth Holguin there name
LRE is a requirement by the federal law that states that all students with disabilities should receive education to the extent that is most appropriate for them. LRE also requires that students with disabilities receive education in a general classroom, with nondisabled peers and they are not to be removed from regular classes; even when supplemental services and aids are used, unless they cannot achieve education in regular classes satisfactorily (Keuhne, 1998)). FAPE means that children with disabilities will receive the appropriate education under the public school system, with no cost to the parent. IDEA does not define inclusion because it requires school districts to make sure there is an individualized approach to determining the less restrictive environment for students with disabilities. In such as case, inclusion is not implemented as a one-size-fits-all approac.

To ensure sustainable and appropriate development of land to meet social, economic and cultural needs;

Respond to the following in the form of a literary essay. Your essay should consist of at least five paragraphs.
William Shakespeare incorporates a number of important themes into
Romeo and Juliet
. Some of the most prominent themes in the play address love’s power, the power of fate, the danger of haste, and the collision of opposites. Shakespeare conveys his message about these themes through the words of the characters, the events of the plot, and the various motifs that recur in the work. Choose one of the central themes of
Romeo and Juliet
and trace it throughout the play, explaining not only what message Shakespeare conveys but how he manages to convey it.
Cite specific examples from the play in your response.

Last week we created scripts for open ended questions with
children, often being able to guide children through putting
words to questions and fears and misconceptions is the first part
of developing coping skills. Sometimes finding the right words
to guide the child with, or even for the child to find a word that
they've never before used within the context of a loss, is even
more challenging.
This week we'll be finding creative ways to guide children
through word discovery--finding a therapeutic project that we
can create a positive memory through, and even help children
develop words that they otherwise wouldn't have in this
2. context.
One example (one of my favorites, and truly one of the most
beautiful I've seen in action) is the creation of luminaries shared
in the
Camp Erin video.
Kids who aren't ready to express grief through words can
experience much needed therapeutic input as they create
something very personal and prepare to memorialize the person
who's died. The words may not be present, but the actions and
feelings are very much present, and it's tasks such as these that
often are the first step in healing for children!
Find and share a single activity that is therapeutic in nature, and
can be used to help a child successfully cope with a death. An
activity manageable (with support) by a child, meaning it
"speaks" to them without requiring them to verbally share their
experience. What is a positive way for a child to recreate (even
if mentally) and save a memory? What types of activities can
give a child closure (even if that closure is simply that the child
isn't alone in their grief)?
Pinterest
is a terrific place to start looking-- and you can start pinning
what you find for your Memory Box project due later in the
course.

3. In the past, many theorists and researchers did not describe a
child’s reaction to death as “grief.” A young child’s reaction to
death appeared to be comparably less stressful and shor t-lived.
According to recent research, however, children – even infants
– do experience acute “grief,” and sometimes, the feelings are
even life-threatening. As a result, it is very important for a
child, who is experiencing grief, to be provided with
opportunities to release pent-up emotions and relive memories
through actions, feelings, and/or words (Meier & Eddy, 2011).
It can be difficult, however, especially for children, to express
their grief in words. Sometimes, the words may just not come. A
child who isn’t ready to express his/her grief in words can
experience therapeutic input by creating a personal project to
memorialize the person who has died. For example, the child
can create a
remembering ornament
.
To create a remembering ornament, the child will need one
translucent ornament (preferably plastic), lots of ribbon (6-10
different colors), squares or strips of paper (depending on
whether the child wants to write or draw his/her memories),
beads, stars, snowflakes (or any other small, shiny objects),
markers, pens, and colored pencils. Lay out each of the colored
ribbons on a table. For each colored ribbon, assign one emotion
that the child feels when he/she thinks about the person whom
he/she has lost. An older child can label his/her own emotions.
For a younger child, you may want to provide him/her with a
list of emotions to choose from; then, he/she can sort the
ribbons accordingly. Lay out the shiny objects, and label them
“memories.” Lay out the strips (or squares) of paper as well as
the markers, pens, and/or colored pencils. Finally, give the
child his/her ornament. When the child is ready, the child will
4. begin to fill his/her ornament with the different “emotions”
(ribbon) that he/she feels when thinking about the loved one
who has passed. Then, the child will fill his/her ornament with
“memories” (beads) that he/she has shared with that loved one.
For an older child, you may want to limit the memories to
holiday memories, as this is a holiday activity. For a younger
child, you may want to make it any memory, as he/she may have
fewer holiday memories to remember. Next, the child will use
his/her strips (or squares) of paper to write or draw whatever
he/she would like, pertaining to the person who has died. For
example, the child might write a message to his/her loved one
or draw a memory that he/she has recently shared with his/her
loved one. Finally, the child will fill his/her ornament with the
strips (or squares) of paper, close up the ornament, and tie a
ribbon to the top. Then the ornament will be ready to display.
This activity is one of many ways in which children can
acknowledge grief, specifically during the holiday season. That
being said, however, the ornament can be displayed as
decoration for any time of year, too.

The holidays are really tough for people of all ages
experiencing grief. The memories of their loved one can feel
5. overwhelming and sometimes it seems like “someone is
missing” from the holiday and family (Doka, 1995).
In the grief support group that I observed, we talked about
holidays being a really hard time for people who have lost
someone important to them. One of the participants described it
as “feeling like there’s always an empty seat at the table”.
Another described the feeling of being excited and wanting to
share something with that person and then you realize you can't
and it feels like "you just reached out but only grabbed
onto air". Kids, especially, struggle with holidays and missing
their family members, but may not have the same words to
express their feelings. Their routines are already different with
the holiday times, their traditions may be different after their
loved one has died and there is somebody important to them
who isn’t able to be there. A Memory Lantern is a way for kids
to remember a few favorite memories with their loved one,
while also utilizing drawings to express grief.
The CCLS and kids start by talking about the project,
explaining that the kids will be making a lantern to decorate the
house/table/etc. and can show them the supplies. The supplies
needed are 3-4 medium colorful squares of tissue paper, a
mason jar, markers, and lights.
Kids pick out pieces of tissue paper and draw their favorite
memories on it with marker (other drawing instruments may rip
the paper, marker seems to work the best). While they are
drawing, the CCLS and child can talk about the child/family’s
holiday traditions, emotions, what they picked to draw about,
the loved one they are missing and thinking about, the good
memories they had together, and anything else that comes up
during conversation. The child can explain the memories to the
CCLS as they are drawing, or choose not to. After the child is
finished drawing on the tissue paper, use modge podge to attach
it to the outside of a mason jar and then put a little modge
6. podge over the top of the tissue paper. After the tissue paper is
dry, a real candle, LED candle or string lights can be put into
the glass jar and will light up the colorful memories! This can
also be a great activity for non-holiday times and can be used as
a colorful night light, always reminding them of their loved one.
Edited to add: after reading another person's post about
introducing colorful ribbons and assigning (or the child
choosing) emotions they felt about that person for each colored
ribbon, I would add this to the lantern. After the conversation
about emotions and grief, I would have the child tie those
colorful ribbons around the mouth of the jar to add
color/decoration and the ability for the child to express their
emotions aside from the ones tied to the memories they drew.
