Plateaus are flat land areas that are higher than surrounding water bodies, characterized by steep slopes and flat tops. They are divided into three types - intermontane plateaus partially or completely surrounded by mountains, piedmont plateaus found at the feet of mountain ranges, and continental plateaus that are higher than surrounding plains.
