Monarch Conservation-Increase Population Chuck Melvin
Butterfly Conservation, The Monarch butterfly population is declining due to decreasing habitat in Mexico and the USA. You can help the Monarch planting milkweed in yards, gardens and open areas in the Monarch migration paths. There are vacant lands where seeds of milkweeds and wild flowers can be planted, this includes roadsides and power line right-of-ways. This year the monarch started their migration north, but the climate prevented milkweed plants from maturing enough to provide leaves for female butterflies to lay eggs and to feed the newly hatched caterpillars. Starting milkweed plants inside, then replanting them outside for the migrating butterflies to use will help sustain the Monarch butterfly population. Harvesting Milkweed seeds in the fall will provide seeds to plant in the spring. Your area may have seen a decline in Monarch butterflies. Monarch eggs, caterpillars and chrysalises can be purchased online or from local butterfly farms.
The monarch butterfly undergoes an annual migration, traveling from the central US and Canada to Mexico in the fall and back north in the spring. Western monarch populations have declined sharply due to loss of milkweed habitat and other threats. Planting native milkweed and nectar plants can help support the monarch butterfly.

The document discusses the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. It begins as an egg laid on milkweed leaves by the female monarch. The eggs hatch into larvae that eat milkweed leaves for two weeks until transforming into caterpillars. The caterpillars then form pupas and undergo transformation over two weeks into adult monarch butterflies. The butterflies migrate south for winter and return north in spring, following consistent migration patterns each year during which huge numbers gather together.
The monarch butterfly goes through four life stages: egg, caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly. As a caterpillar, it eats swan plant leaves which make it toxic to protect it from predators. It then forms a chrysalis and undergoes metamorphosis to emerge as an adult butterfly. The short-lived butterfly will then lay eggs on swan plants to restart the cycle. The monarch butterfly is known for its long annual migration patterns in North America, while in New Zealand they do not migrate far from where they hatch.

Habitats, Ecosystems, and the Natural World Britney Cooper
This document summarizes information about the native plant habitats and ecosystems found along Kottinger Creek in Pleasanton, CA. It describes several native plant species that grow along the creek, such as coyote brush, western rosebud, California poppies, arroyo willow, coast redwood, and valley oak. It explains how these plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife. The document also discusses how the creek habitat has been restored after facing damage from human activities like agriculture and development. Now Kottinger Creek provides an example of shared land that supports both human and natural communities.
Wanderer's eye: Long Point Chapter by Aniruddha H DAniruddha
The document provides an overview of the biodiversity found at Long Point, Ontario, which is an important stopover for migratory birds. It summarizes the author's observations and documentation of various insects, spiders, snakes, birds, and other wildlife seen at Long Point over two months. The diverse ecosystem supports a high number of resident and migratory species, from ants and bees to dragonflies and snakes. Long Point is an ecologically significant area that must be protected to preserve this biodiversity, including threatened species such as Eastern Hog-nosed snakes.

This document provides guidance on creating a butterfly garden to attract and support butterflies. It discusses choosing a sunny but sheltered location, planting both food sources for caterpillars like wattles and nectar sources for butterflies like daisies. Creating shallow water sources for butterflies to drink and court is also recommended. Chemical pesticides should be avoided as they harm butterflies and other pollinators. With the right mix of native plants that provide food and shelter at each life stage, a butterfly garden can successfully support local butterfly populations.
Bats in Yolo County have both pros and cons - while they eat insects that harm crops, they sometimes carry rabies and invade homes. Overall, bats are an important part of the ecosystem as natural pest control for farmers. The local bats, known as Mexican free-tailed bats, have adapted to ingest pesticides from treated crops as part of their diet. Wild turkeys, once reintroduced far from farms, established wild populations in parts of North America. Male wild turkeys do not assist with parenting duties; females raise the chicks. Aspen trees, a favorite in the Tahoe Basin due to their sounds, are relatively short-lived but grow quickly, making them suitable for landscaping. Their bark
The author revisits sites where the rare Tumamoc globeberry plant was previously observed to check on the status of the populations. At Sabino Canyon, the population appeared to be recovering well after floods in 2006. However, at the type locality on Tumamoc Hill, plants were very difficult to find. The author also visited three additional sites protected by the Bureau of Reclamation, finding one population but not the other two. A new population was discovered in Saguaro National Park. The author notes the variability in available documentation from past surveys of this rare plant.

A Visit to Nature History Museum of LA
Introduction
After visiting the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, I learned so many things concerning the animals that were there in the early days and how they looked like, as well as, how they lived . The Museum has a large paleontological collection that helped me develop a better understanding of the Earth’s biota. The Museum’s collection ranges from fossils to the modern organisms which are collected from the entire world, and it is therefore a good place to begin with when exploring on the paleontological exhibits and other historical items. During the visit at the Museum I learned of a few things that I never knew existed and other facts too that are new. In this article there are a lot of areas and information that are presented showing all the paleontological exhibits and other historical items.
Exhibit 1. The Gray Fox
The gray fox (Botanical name Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is one of the interesting exhibits I found at the museum. The exhibit on Fray Fox features 4 photographs indicating how the small American mammal survives in the wild. The photograph below (Image 1) shows a Gray Fox family in their burrow. It reflects the legacy of life by clear illustrations of how the Gray Fox adapts to the environment. From what I gathered, the animals are largely monogamous. The photograph shows an ideal family in their broken terrain habitat. Gray foxes opt to live in broken terrain and rocky areas in order to ease the process of making new homes.
An adult male is seen overlooking his family that is resting outside their den, probably to show gender roles in the social life of the gray fox. The female (much smaller than the male) lies next to their kit. The fresh soil dug in their burrow shows that their home may be new, indicating that the species may have moved in more than once. Gray foxes diet is comprised of vegetation, small mammals such as mice, and insects. The photograph captures an environment (San Gabriel Mountains, California) capable of meeting the species food needs. Green vegetation provides gray foxes with vegetation foods. Insects feeding on the vegetation are most likely part of the gray fox’s diets. Gray foxes are spread across central USA, Southern Eastern Canada, and Western Venezuela (Reid, 2016).
Information obtained from (Reid, 2016) indicates that one of the most peculiar traits of the gray fox is their ability to climb trees in order to evade predators. The strong claws used to dig and remove earth are used to climb trees. This makes them the only species of the dog family with the ability to climb trees.

Young witch Mixxy was tasked with delivering seeds to maintain peace in the Magical Land, but had an accident that scattered the seeds. This allowed corruption to take hold, making the unicorns believe they were enslaved. They declared they would now enslave the witches and fairies. Mixxy and her bird Potoo realize they must find the Grand Witch's stored seeds to restore order before it's too late. They set off on their broom to save everyone.
This document provides information about various insects through poems, facts, and images. It discusses the anatomy and behaviors of house flies, fireflies, mosquitoes, bees, wasps, grasshoppers, and dragonflies. For each topic, it includes 2-3 facts and a short poem about the insect. The document is intended to educate readers about common bugs through a mix of scientific information and creative writing.

Cluck! Taking a Look at Hens and ChicksFlorence Blum
When you see the phrase “hens and chicks,” do you think of plump birds pecking around the barnyard? You might be right, but in the miniature gardening world, those words have an entirely different meaning. “Hens and chicks” is the common name for a group of succulent plants.
This science report is about the kit fox species, Vulpes macrotis. It discusses the kit fox's diet, which consists of small mammals, birds, reptiles, eggs, and various fruits and berries. The kit fox lives in the grasslands and deserts of western North America, preferring arid climates like desert scrub. Kit foxes are found throughout western United States and northwestern/north-central Mexico, inhabiting the drier parts of California. Kit foxes live in family groups while the young are growing up, then typically live alone or in pairs as adults.
Young witch Mixxy accidentally drops a bag of seeds meant to spread peace in the Magical Land. This allows mischief to take hold, corrupting the unicorns. Camellias leads the unicorns to declare they will enslave the witches and fairies. Mixxy realizes she must make things right. She and her bird Potoo fly off to find more seeds from the Grand Witch, hoping to restore order before it's too late.
The big brown bat is the species of bat most closely associated with humans in North America due to its year-round use of buildings. While populations are currently stable, these bats are vulnerable to pesticide and habitat loss. Creating bat houses can help ensure the bats' survival. The little brown bat lives in trees, buildings, and bat houses in large nursery colonies during the summer and hibernates alone or in small groups during winter.

It's not terribly challenging to figure out, really. Monarchs only spend the winter in Mexico then in
March, they commence their yearly migration northward. They glide correct up the center of our
continent, where they require a lot of nectar-bearing plants to feed on, and specifically milkweed to
lay their eggs.
When the sun ultimately came up, millions of brilliant orange spots burst from the trees, rising and
falling and swirling about me like a wonderful living blizzard.
But of course there is hope.

You see, a handful of years ago I'd had a
close to-religious experience on a
mountaintop in central Mexico. I'd arrived
prior to dawn, on a rented mule. There,
standing silently in the mist, were ancient fir
trees so laden with Monarch butterflies their
bows literally bent beneath the weight. Can
you even picture how numerous butterflies it
requires to make a tree branch sag?
A couple of years ago, on a farm I own in
eastern Nebraska, I took 44 acres out of
