Scholarly Communication for Bioinformatics StudentsPhilip Bourne
Presentation made to the incoming bioinformatics and systems biology students at UCSD on how they could get involved in changing scholarly communication. Given February 28, 2011
RSC|ChemSpider is one of the world’s largest online resources for chemistry related data and services. Developed with the intention of delivering access to structure-based chemistry data via the internet the ChemSpider platform hosts over 26 million unique chemical compounds aggregated from over 400 data sources and provides an environment for the community to both annotate and curate these existing data as well as deposit new data to the system. The search system delivers flexible querying capabilities together with links to external sites for publication and patent data. ChemSpider has spawned a number of projects include ChemSpider SyntheticPages for hosting openly peer-reviewed chemical synthesis articles. This presentation will review the present capabilities of the ChemSpider system providing direct examples of how to use the system to source high quality data of value to pharmaceutical companies. We will discuss some of the challenges associated with validating data quality, examine how ChemSpider is a part of the semantic web for chemistry and investigate approaches to using ChemSpider integrated to analytical instrumentation.

Using Fedora Commons To Create A Persistent ArchivePhil Cryer
With the increasing amount of digital data and demand for open access to view and reuse such data continually increasing, the adoption of open source digital repository software is critical for long term storage and management of digital objects. By utilizing the open source Fedora Commons software, the Missouri Botanical Garden has created a stable, persistent archive for Tropicos digital objects, including specimen images, plant photos, and other digital media. Metadata, organized in standard Dublin Core extracted from Tropicos, are stored alongside the digital objects providing search and sharing of data via open standards such as REST and OAI, opening the door for mash-ups and alternative uses. The presentation will cover initial discovery, required hardware and software, and an overview of our experience implementing Fedora Commons. Lessons learned, pros and cons, and other options will also be covered.
Living in the Cloud: Hosting Data & Apps Using the Google InfrastructurePamela Fox
In the modern web, the user rules. Nearly every successful web app has to worry about scaling to an exponentially growing user base and giving those users multiple ways of interacting with their data. Pamela Fox, Maps API Support Engineer & Developer advocate, provides an overview of two technologies - Google App Engine and the Google Data APIs - that aim to make web development and data portability easier.

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) has developed a Catalogue of Metadata standards and tools aimed at researchers and those who support them. In its new version, the Metadata Standards Catalog will provide much greater detail about metadata standards and tools, and through its new API - it will be usable within other applications. It will also provide a platform for furthering the work of the RDA Metadata Interest Group, which is seeking to improve the interoperability of metadata in different standards by working towards semi-automatically generated converters.
An examination of the current data portability design patterns used in Social Media sites. Looking at a possible new Open Stack concept to create true plug and play interfaces for user to exchange data.

Documenting Ferguson: Building a community digital repositoryChris Freeland
The August 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, along with other recent police-involved shootings around the country have inspired demonstrations, conversation, debate and calls for systemic change in our society. Soon after Brown’s shooting, Washington University Libraries and other St. Louis cultural heritage institutions established a repository to document events in or inspired by Ferguson. Appropriately named Documenting Ferguson, this community-sourced open repository now has more than 1,500 files of digital photographs, video recordings and other media contributed from all over the country. These are viewable online at http://digital.wustl.edu/ferguson. Video of this talk available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6whGNsesYA.
Newman Numismatic Portal Overview - Mar 2015Chris Freeland
The Newman Numismatic Portal will create the world’s most comprehensive online encyclopedia of American and Colonial coinage, currency, realia, and related correspondence and published literature. Materials from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society’s coin collections and supporting reference libraries will be digitized along with University collections and made available to an online community of scholars and enthusiasts. Digital content will be stored, curated and preserved by specialists in the Libraries, with corresponding curatorial activities on physical/analog materials. Outreach activities will raise awareness about the research portal and its contents.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.
