This document summarizes 11 teams and their proposed OpenSocial gadgets for the Code Jam. It includes gadgets for:
- Searching and sharing scientific data between groups
- Connecting researcher publications and datasets through a workflow using digital identifiers
- Viewing media presentations from a Mediasite server
- Integrating student information from various university systems
- Creating and monitoring dynamic light paths and network bandwidth usage
- Viewing and interacting with 3D molecular structures on the web
Building Web APIs on top of SPARQL endpoints is becoming common practice. It enables universal access to the integration favorable data space of Linked Data. In the majority of use cases, users cannot be expected to learn SPARQL to query this data space. Web APIs are the most common way to enable programmatic access to data on the Web. However, the implementation of Web APIs around Linked Data is often a tedious and repetitive process. Recent work speeds up this Linked Data API construction by wrapping it around SPARQL queries, which carry out the API functionality under the hood. Inspired by this development, in this paper we present grlc, a lightweight server that takes SPARQL queries curated in GitHub repositories, and translates them to Linked Data APIs on the fly.

As the volume and complexity of data from myriad Earth Observing platforms, both remote sensing and in-situ increases so does the demand for access to both data and information products from these data. The audience no longer is restricted to an investigator team with specialist science credentials. Non-specialist users from scientists from other disciplines, science-literate public, to teachers, to the general public and decision makers want access. What prevents them from this access to resources? It is the very complexity and specialist developed data formats, data set organizations and specialist terminology. What can be done in response? We must shift the burden from the user to the data provider. To achieve this our developed data infrastructures are likely to need greater degrees of internal code and data structure complexity to achieve (relatively) simpler end-user complexity. Evidence from numerous technical and consumer markets supports this scenario. We will cover the elements of modern data environments, what the new use cases are and how we can respond to them.

Integrating Apache Phoenix with Distributed Query EnginesDataWorks Summit
This talk will describe the work being done to create connectors for Presto and Apache Spark to read and write data in Phoenix tables. We will describe the new phoenix connector that implements Spark’s DataSource v2 API which will enable customizing and optimizing reads and writes to Phoenix tables.
We will also demo the Presto-phoenix connector, showing how it can be used to federate multiple Phoenix clusters and join Phoenix data with different types of data sources.
We will also describe some in progress work to more tightly integrate with the query optimizers of these frameworks in order to provide table statistics and push down filters, limits and aggregates into Phoenix whenever possible in order to speed up query execution.
Another area being worked on is to provide a way to support bulk loading using HFiles.

This presentation will be a live exchange of ideas & arguments, between a representative of a start up working on agricultural information management and discovery, and a representative of academia that has recently completed his PhD and is now leading a young and promising research team.
The two presenters will focus on the case of a recommendation service that is going to be part of a web portal for organic agriculture researchers and educators (called Organic.Edunet), which will help users find relevant educational material and bibliography. They currently develop this as part of an EU-funded initiative but would both be interested to find a way to further sustain this work: the start up by including this to the bundle of services that it offers to the users of its information discovery packages, and the research team by attracting more funding to further explore recommendation technologies.
The start up representative will describe his evergoing, helpless and aimless efforts to include a research activity on recommender systems within the R&D strategy of the company, for the sakes of the good-old-PhD-times. And will explain why this failed.
The academia representative will describe the great things that his research can do to boost the performance of recommendation services in such portals. And why this does-not-work-yet-operationally because he cannot find real usage data that can prove his amazing algorithm outside what can be proven in offline lab experiments using datasets from other domains (like MovieLens and CiteULike).
Both will explain how they started working together in order to design, experimentally test, and deploy the Organic.Edunet recommendation service. And will describe their expectations from this academic-industry collaboration. Then, they will reflect on the challenges they see in such partnerships and how (if) they plan to overcome them.
