David de Boer presented on his work with Planidoo, an event organization platform built using Zotonic and other technologies. The current architecture uses two separate APIs and data stacks that interconnect data between Zotonic and other services like Elasticsearch. De Boer discussed potential solutions to streamline the architecture including using Elasticsearch as a single data source or rebuilding the system entirely in Erlang. He also emphasized the importance of building community around new projects through stability, documentation, and approachability.

Let me handle that for you... Why you need a reverse proxy in your architecture.
Containers are the runtime for distributed apps - that's old .NET monoliths being broken down into multiple components, as well as new .NET Core microservices projects. Your orchestrator can connect containers together without making any of them publicly accessible, so you can make your entire app private with just a single, secure entrypoint to your application.
That's a reverse proxy, a piece of software which receives all external network traffic and fetches the response from a private container, before sending it back to the client. You can offload a lot of concerns to your reverse proxy and keep your application code clean - the proxy handles SSL, compression, load-balancing, routing and healthchecks.
In this session you'll see the popular open-source reverse proxy Traefik in action. I'll use Traefik as the front-end to distributed .NET applications running in a Docker cluster, and show you to add the features of a reverse proxy without any changes to application code.

MongoDB Interface for Asterisk PBX
This document discusses app_mongodb, an Asterisk application that allows interaction between an Asterisk PBX and MongoDB. What is “dataflow?” — the process and tooling around gathering necessary information and getting it into a useful form to make insights available. Portable Class Library Deep Dive
This document discusses portable class libraries (PCLs), which allow sharing of code across platforms like Xamarin Android and iOS. PCLs use a single assembly that can target multiple platforms. They enable centralized code sharing and debugging across platforms. PCLs are a subset of the .NET framework and cannot reference platform-specific libraries. HTTP caching with Varnish
With the Varnish caching proxy you can make websites blazingly fast. The basics are quite simple once you understand how cache handling in HTTP works. For starters, we will look into HTTP and Varnish configuration. The main course is going to be test-driven cache invalidation and the cache tagging strategy. For desserts, there will be an introduction to Edge Side Includes (ESI). All of this will be liberally sprinkled with examples from the FOSHttpCache library and some ideas from the FOSHttpCacheBundle for Symfony2.
Going crazy with Varnish and Symfony
You know how HTTP caching works but need more? In this talk we look into ways to cache personalized content. We will look at Edge Side Includes (ESI) to tailor caching rules of fragments, and at the user context concept to differentiate caches not by individual user but by permission groups.
HTTP Caching and PHP
David de Boer gave a presentation on caching and invalidation with PHP and HTTP. He explained that caching can reduce response times and server load. The key challenges are cache invalidation and efficient caching through maximizing hits and infinite TTLs. He demonstrated using Varnish and Nginx caches with FOSHttpCache for purging, invalidating by regex, tags, and routes. Tests were also shown to validate invalidation. The FOSHttpCacheBundle integrates this with Symfony through annotations.
HTTP cache: keeping it fresh
HTTP caching solutions such as Varnish are great for improving web application performance. Filling up the cache is easy, but how do you get rid of cache entries when they become stale? There are three ways: expiration, validation and invalidation. The first two are nice and simple, but have their limitations. The other option, invalidation, is frowned upon for its complexity. Still, it can be very useful. Case in point: an e-learning web platform we built that serves a large number of Dutch pupils and their teachers. I will tell you why and how we added an invalidation scheme to this platform. I will also show you our lightweight Symfony bundle that makes cache invalidation a little less complex.

For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
