3. We are pleased to present an overview on how the
Food for Progress Partnership is unfolding in Malawi
as per 30 October 2007.
As an introduction we will briefly sum up the main
objectives of the Partnership.

4. Objective 1 * Agricultural Development
Establish 230 Farmers Clubs with 11,500 members to
increase net earnings by at least 30%.
Objective 2 * HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care
Cover a population of 400,000 people of which
240,000 Malawians will be reached with individual
counseling for behavior change through the program
called “TCE - Total Control of the Epidemic.”

5. Objective 3 * Teacher Training
Support the training of 210 rural primary school
teachers in Malawi at DAPP’s Teacher Training
Colleges.
Construct and start operating a new Teacher Training
College in Shire Highlands.
Objective 4 * Nutrition
American Soybean Association to carry out nutrition
training for 200 Field Officers and 150 students.

240 Farmer Clubs have been established –
with 12,000 individuals participating.

9,000 farmers are now growing at least
4 different types of vegetables.

All 12,000 farmers have been trained in tree planting.
So far 74,430 seedlings have been produced and planted.

installed, and a rope pump
production has been established at
DAPP’s Vocational School.

240 model gardens and nurseries have been established
and 11,000 farmers are practicing conservation tillage as
demonstrated in the gardens.

7,890 farmers have been trained in keeping livestock –
and 1,500 farmers have received pigs or goats as pass
on loans.

and lessons on HIV/AIDS awareness.

Establish and operate 4 TCE Areas covering
400,000 people.
Reach at least 60% of the target population with
individual counseling.
Create demands and access to health services on a
local level – e.g. VCT, PMTCT, ARV’s etc.
Mobilize 1,000 Passionates to be active in the fight
against HIV/AIDS.

systematically – talking,
mobilizing and counseling
every individual to adopt
safe sexual behavior and to
care for people living with
AIDS.

The Field officers organize and support “Positive
Living Clubs” and establish vegetable gardens.

150 teachers will graduate from or will be studying
at the Teacher Training College of Chilangoma.
7,500 children in rural areas have received lessons.
A new Teacher Training College at Amalika in
Shire Highlands will be constructed and equipped.
60 students will be enrolled at the new Teacher
Training College supported by the
USDA agreement - but will graduate after the
project period.

The Educational system has been developed.
Laptops with internet connection have been installed with
one for every 3 students. All computers have access to a
database of study tasks and courses from the curriculum.

Additional dormitories and classrooms for 112 students
have been constructed at the existing Teacher Training
College.

work and for the College’s consumption.

35 HA of land have been secured for the second
Teacher Training College in Thyolo District - and the
project has been welcomed by all the local leaders.

Construction contracts have been signed, the access
road has been cut and the soil work has started.

25 students for the new college have started – at TTC
Chilangoma for the time being. They will move with
their teachers as soon as the facilities are in place.

200 Field Officers and 150 student teachers trained
in basis nutrition and in cooking with soy products.
