Project 4 (55 Points)
Consumer and industrial waste have only two possible ends.
One is discharge to the environment, while the other is reuse,
reclamation, or recycling. The discharge to the environment
may lead toward endangering our own state of living, and
therefore, more and more ways are being researched in order to
increase the reuse and recycling of production and consumer
byproducts.
The following suggestions were presented by students during a
brainstorming session designed to release their creativity in
determining the solution to an industrial problem. The problem
given them involved making a useful product from a relatively
useless byproduct, in this case, coffee grounds.
Possible products from used coffee grounds include the
following:
(a) fertilizer,
(b) records,
(c) products with a coffee aroma,
(d) ashtrays,
(e) concrete filler,
(f) an agent for sopping up oil spills,
(g) chewing gum,
(h) dye,
(i) pigment for paint,
(j) pet food,
(k) weaker coffee,
(1) disposable garbage cans,
(m) an abrasive,
(n) a protein substitute,
(o) an alternative fuel,
(p) hog food,
(q) soap,
(r) particle board,
(s) insulation,
(t) ballast,
(u) fire extinguishers.
The fourth project for this course requires the response to the
following questions. Here is another opportunity to be creative
and invent.
Select from the list an example that you consider to be logical
and one that you consider illogical. For each of these choices,
develop a rough plan of how to produce and market the product
you have chosen. It may surprise you how logical some illogical
ideas can be when thought of in a creative manner.
Write an Executive Summary outlining your plan and stating as
many reasons as possible for both your logical and illogical
choice. Build a case that supports and backs your decision. Be
concise with your argument. A two (2) page double spaced
paper does not leave a lot of room for fluff.
Saving & Naming Your File for Blackboard:
When saving your file, make sure that your name and the
project number are included in it. Due time for blackboard turn

Suggestions before you hand in your essay...
1. Read each one of the required items. Check off the boxes —
make sure you have
completed the assignment.
2. Use the spell/grammar checker on your computer! There is no
reason to turn in an
assignment with misspellings and simple grammatical errors.
3. Proofread the essay aloud — even after your computer
grammar check. If you have
trouble proofing your own work, have a friend, or your mom, or
a friend’s mom read it for you.
4. Above is my grading scale for the table. I will read your
work, and assign points
according to the categories in the table above.
The format for the paper:
A single page (1) Executive Summary typed in 12-point font, 1
inch margins, double spaced. Correct misspellings and grammar
errors. The submitted paper should look professional.
