Using PechaKucha/Ignite in the classroom

2.  What is it?
› PechaKucha 20x20 is a simple presentation
format where you show 20 images, each for
20 seconds, the images advancing
automatically as the presenter talks.
 How to say it?
› Japanese word meaning chatter

Informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and
share their ideas, works, thoughts, just about anything, in the
PechaKucha 20x20 format.

5.  History
› The presentation format was devised by
Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein
Dytham architecture.
› The first PechaKucha Night was held in their
Tokyo studio in February, 2003. Klein Dytham
Architecture still organizes and supports the
global PechaKucha Night network and
organize PechaKucha Night Tokyo.

6.  Purpose
› Because architects talk too much! Give a
microphone and some images to an
architect -- or most creative people for that
matter -- and they'll go on forever! Give
PowerPoint to anyone else and they have
the same problem.

7.  What is it?
› A particular type of event (‘geek’) event
held in over 100 cities worldwide
› Organized by volunteers
› Participants speak about their personal or
professional passions using the Ignite format
› The presentations should ignite the audience
on a subject leading to awareness, thought
and action

8.  “Imagine that you’re in front of an
audience made up of your friends, family,
and people from your community, about to
present a 5-minute talk on the thing you’re
most passionate about. You’ve brought 20
slides, which advance every 15 seconds
whether you’re ready or not. You have a
few last-minute butterflies, but off you go—
and the crowd loves it. Welcome to Ignite.”

10.  The first Ignite was held in Seattle in 2006
and was the brainchild of Brady Forrest and
Bre Pettis
 Sponsored by O’Reilly Media and Make
magazine who continue to be the main
sponsors of Ignite events
 There have been over 50 events since its
creation in 2006
 Largest Ignite to date is Ignite Boulder which
attracted 1,350 attendees on June 24, 2010

13.  Students give presentations on most any
subject in the PechaKucha/Ignite format
 Students are increasingly socially
conscious and active. These formats
provide them a tool for enlightening and
moving others to action.
